    coolant flange replacement, question

Just trying to research to see if I am in for any surprises. Why do people recommend replacing the ECT sensor, what is the reasoning for this?
    thanks!

    Re: coolant flange replacement, question

The sensor's have been known to go bad for others and is not an expensive item to purchase. If you are DIY'ing on the coolant flange, it's just easy to replace since you have everything out of the way anyway to get to the flange. I just did my flange last weekend at 76K and did replace my sensor also -- will keep the original as a backup.

This tool is a lifesaver. Use it to remove the clamps. Wear eye protection.

This will help you see what you're doing. You'll feel blind without it.

Good luck... this DIY was a major PITA.

    Re: coolant flange replacement, question

Very much agree about the clamp plier and mirror shown. I already had the pliers, very necessary on the two squeeze clamps for the rubber coolant line -- get the one shown. Actually had to stop in the middle of the job to go buy one of those mirrors -- big help to see how to get the bottom bolt/nut off the coolant flange. I also had to stop and go buy gear rachet wrench set along with the socket set I show in my AW post to get the top bolt off the flange -- very small clearance called for a very low profile socket and rachet setup. Make sure you have some extra zip ties for the ones you cut away, and replacement hose clamps for the vacuum lines that you disconnect.

That tool is a godsend. I did this job with the SAI in place and without that hose clamp tool. What a pain in the ass. I did this job when I put my new engine in and the SAI was gone. What a simple job. The SAI system makes this task 10x more difficult than it should really be.
