    Garrett GT28RS turbo assembly *need pics*

    My friend just took apart his Garrett GT28 turbo and now he has to put everything back together including the exhaust housing, wastegate...etc

    He made some marks before he took it apart, but now he can't remember how to put it together

    So wonder if you guys have a 360 degree picture of the turbo assembly, so that he can piece it back together.

    your friend should not be taking apart a turbo if he doesn't know how to put it together, im sure it has to be re-balanced by a machine before it is put together.

    Taking apart.. .define please? Just pulled the turbine and compressor housings off the center section? Or disassembled the center section? If its the latter I think you're f'd.

    If its just the housings you can put them on in any orientation you want. The bolts and clamps are pretty self explanatory. If you need pictures I can post up photos of my 2871R later tonight. Its the same thing, just bigger compressor housing but the mounts are the same.

    Yes please post them up, much appreciated. He just took off the compressor housing and turbine housing.

    I'll do it tonight. I forgot to check this thread when I went home last night.

    Here's a written explanation. It is really simple to reinsert these housings.

    Turbine housing goes on the side with the wheel that looks fairly 'simple'. The Compressor housing goes on the side with the wheel that has some fancy airfoils (2-3 wrapped up on themselves).

    The compressor housing has 4 or 5 brackets that encompass two bolts per bracket. These brackets clamp the housing onto the backing plate. The backing plate is aluminum like the housing. Gently push the housing onto (keeping it centered) the backing plate. Then insert the brackets and bolts. I think a 13mm wrench works. Do not overtighten these bolts. They can strip easily due to the aluminum they are threading into.

    If I remember correctly, the turbine housing has some brackets as well. The backing plate is a high temp alloy like the turbine housing itself. This backing plate is typically smaller in diameter than the compressor housing. Installation is the same as the compressor housing.

    Before tightening everything down you want to clock both housings for proper orientation in your engine compartment. They just rotate relative to the center section. Super easy. Don't forget to install the wastegate actuator bracket on the compressor housing.

    Really? a good friend us "slapping" a monster Holset on a BMW and you can buy the rebuild kits from just about anywhere. A quick Google shows most Garrett parts are available also... if you have the means and everything, what isn't user-serviceable? Honest question, not being argumentative, maybe certain units are sealed?

    Holsets and Borg Warners are fully serviceable but should still be balanced properly before use. The Garret ball bearing center section is not serviceable.

    I found pictures from when I removed my GT28RS from my car to sell it. The turbo in these photos is still in one-piece but I'm sure you can figure out how it goes together.

    My suggestion is to keep the bolts loose as you clock the compressor and turbine housing. Once you figure out where they need to be in relation to each other and the oil/coolant lines in the center section... only then can you tighten things up tight (recommended off the manifold).

    the balancing that needs to be done cannot be done by joe shmoe on his workbench.
