alrihgt, just what i wanted to hear. Obviously was going stainless, but if it was no biggy going alum then i would have saved money.
Thanks, keep advice coming if you want....
Deciding to save $$$ by going with Techtonics stainless so it's a win-win!

    Re: Quick exhaust ?

I personally really like my Neuspeed catback. It bolts together instead of using those slip pipes and the welds look great. It's stainless also.

Not sure what you're paying for the borla based exhaust but neuspeed is another option if you can find a comparable price. I went to supreme power for mine and they gave me a deal since it was around christmas time :-)

really, i don't need anything huge because im not BT or anything. Just wanted something that sounded real nice that's not ricey. I guess 2.5" is fine. The custom route... I've seen its cheaper? what's the benefits???.
I have 99.5 1.8T FWD tip, my problem.
THe techtonics stainless is $645... + whatever install is
Will i throw CELs w/ any of these options?
I wouldn't even know where to start if I went custom! lol. help?

    Re: Quick exhaust ?

^^ well you sir, got a nice deal! Go with whatever size you want, I would probably go around 2.5-2.75 if i was you since your not going BT. You won't throw a cel if you leave the cat in, if you take it out there is a chance of you getting one but there are ways around it like a defouler or getting a tune that takes the code away.

This is just one of those things that you hear people telling you to go custom or premade. I didnt listen to the people telling me not to go custom, and I have spent $$ to get my custom where I want it, and it still isnt as good as my APR now. Get the tectonics and save the hassle

What was wrong with your custom? Theoretically a 2.5" APR and a 2.5" custom are going to yield the same results(depending on muffler). It's not like APR has found some new technology in exhaust. Granted the custom isn't half assed, kinked, leaks, etc.

    Re: Quick exhaust ?

Stainless steel > aluminized steel > plain ferrous steel. Stainless also has much better heat retention properties which helps keep exhaust velocity higher than a mild or aluminized steel.

FWIW, the downpipe is usually the most restrictive part of the exhaust.

Type 1 Aluminized Steel is cold rolled steel sheet that has been hot-dip coated both sides with aluminum-silicon alloy by the continuous method. This process assures a tight metallurgical bond between the steel sheet and its aluminum coating, producing a material with a unique combination of properties possessed neither by steel nor by aluminum alone. Aluminized steel sheet has the surface characteristics of aluminum with the superior strength and lower cost of steel. It is supplied usually with a soft satiny finish. It may be ordered “extra smooth” when higher reflectivity is desired. Weight of the aluminum coating applied to both sides of the sheet is approximately 0.40 ounces per square foot providing a thickness coating of about .00075” of aluminum per side. All thicknesses of steel receive the same weight of coating. Aluminized Sheet Type 1 resists destructive heat scaling to 1250° F., rejects as much as 80% of radiant heat up to 900° F. with excellent resistance to heat and corrosion.

    Notes:
Temper - Stocked in commercial quality temper and drawing quality this material may be bent 180° over a bending radius equal to twice its thickness without flaking or peeling. Commercial quality is not produced to Rockwell harness restrictions.

Forming Characteristics - Suitable for forming, shallow drawing and embossing. When severe drawing applications are required, Special Killed Drawing Quality Material is available on special order.

Typical Applications - Baking pans and covers, barbecue grills, burners, furnaces and space heaters, mufflers, water heaters, popcorn poppers, incinerators, etc.

    Re: Quick exhaust ?

I emailed Mobileoneinc (one local shop) and he told me that going custom would be more expensive and you really only need to go that route if there isn't a premade exhaust for you're car.
He also suggested Techtonics stainless & has one in stock

He lied to you, he just doesn't want to do the job, turning down money just crazy. Go to him with the car and tell him to bend some 2.25 or 2.50 inch straight piping to fit your car and pick out the muffler of your choice, not hard just about everyone on here has done this. If you woulf like to add some more and for a resonable price then get a test pipe or the labree HFC and down pipe from them is nice too and their you go an exhaust.

can't go test pipe. need cat. trying to save money, so not really looking at high flow cat.
I asked Dubwerks (for Techtonics DP & exhaust) and they quoted $1175. That's with labor/everything. Moblieoneinc told me $1150 for same thing.
    That's crazy $$$...
I'm going to just get GIAC flash for starters...

    Re: Quick exhaust ?

i have a custom bent 2.5 aluminized exhaust with a magnaflow muffler, paid 234 and some change, installed and done with muffler...

yeah stainless will last forever, but remember, most exhaust shops with stainless pipe, still weld with mild steel wire and regardless the material, it isnt going to leak quicker if its alumized or stainless.. if its welded solid, it will YEARS for the alum to rust enough to cause any leaks.. but that time your car will be on its 10th owner.

oh and i LOVE my exhaust.. no drone when driving down the highway with my foot just enough to keep it at speed.. always deep toned.

That is a rip off. Call up more places. Even if you have to drive an hour, a custom 2.5-3" exhaust shouldn't run you more than $500.

    Re: Quick exhaust ?

alright, so lets say I go custom. I have to pass emissions so I still need a cat. Since I'm stock right now, My car has both resonator and muff. What do they do when they pipe? Just straight back to muffler? Don't want to be deaf because it is my DD, so I'll be driving at 30mph at times and on highway at times.
Any suggestions on mufflers? Was looking at borla, but open to advice....

    Re: Quick exhaust ?

i have 2.5 from infront of the flex back (they didnt wanna go up to my downpipe, i will later on when i change downpipes).. i have a magnaflow muffler with dual 3" tips (1/4" on each side bigger then stock.. its not ugly nor really noticable) and my shit is not loud at all. and it sounds NOTHING like some of the raspy/ricey video clips of magnaflow on the net sound.. i have no resenator at all. deep and throttle-ly.. lol

    Re: Quick exhaust ?

For what its worth, I had a thread similar to this almost a year ago. Everyone told me they got custom mandrel bent exhausts for like $400. I called every exhaust shop in CT/MA/NY within like 3 hours of where I live and they all told me that a mandrel bent exhaust would be like $1200.

I searched the classifieds and got a Borla V1 with testpipe for $600.

See, at first I was just chipped and got my axle back custom exhaust for like $400. I had the magnaflow 14815 muffler and 1 resonator and it sounded awesome. Fastforward a couple months, I got a BT and with a BT things got deep quick. The tone was super deep and drony i couldnt stand it. At that point I didnt have a TP or DP yet, so to add that on would be another $400 ontop of my custom exhaust. So for a while I had 2 resonators and a testpipe and it was a little quieter but still some drone. I got the APR resonated exhaust and it had a much better note and wasnt as quiet. Kinda hard to explain, but if you have gone BT i think you might understand.
Not many shops mandrel bend, and it aint cheap either.
