Anyone that has painted alloy wheels have any feedback or helpfull input.

I recently purchased new wheels and planning on painting them. I am just wondering if I need to worry about chipping or any kind of things I got to worry about. They are alloy and they are going to be black.

The reason I ask is because I have gone to a nation known bodyshop owner. (who is recently working on a wide body kit saleen for a camaro and it looks HOT) and he told me that he wouldn't do it if he was me. Reason behind it was because of the future chipping and blah blah. I really didnt want to hear it because I have not heard anybody complaining about their wheels messing up after they sprayed them, themselves or even after they actually paid somebody to paint them.

Anyways this might just be a dumb question but I figured i would ask anyways. let me know what you think spray experts. Thanks

Prime it, use paint that's designed for rims, Duplocolor has some, check them out, suppose to withstand the rigors of the road.

So duplocolor worked perfect for you? I would do it myself but this guy is doing all 4 for 75 bucks. (I know his son)

Looked great on my repair of my curb rash...but if someone else will do it, $75 for 4 is cheap. When I had the Infiniti Dealer do my M35's they charged me $250 a rim...

Any ideas on which paint brand and color to repair B7 RS4 reps in Hypersilver? I am looking at a trade for my USP wheels, but one is pretty curb rashed. I've studied the DIY on A4Mods, but need to know the color and brand for a DIY.

here's a better one, since that one has an effect done to it:

If you want real endurance have them powder coated, which comes in any color you can imagine, very popular in the motorcycle world

LOL, we have an artist aboard...LOL...looks like some "masking" need to be involved., btw, you could have merely selected the spokes and then played with the color levels to make it white and do the same for the ring, make it black...done in 60 seconds. I don't have PS CS3 here at work, otherwise I'd show you.

i painted mine with duplicolor. You don't need primer unless there is no paint on the wheel. If you are painting bare metal, you need to prime it first. If the wheel has paint already on it, you only need to scuff the existing paint with a scotch brite pad, clean it with alcohol, and paint it. Allowing for time between coats. The more coats you put on, the less likely the chance of chipping paint. Duplicolor all the way. I've done two sets of wheel in this fashion. Didn't even need to take the tire off, just tape it off.

Was also going to suggest powder coating. It's stronger/more durable than paint and costs just about the same. I had my wheels professionally painted, and just like the paint on your car, it's gunna get rock chips eventually. So far i only have one tiny little rock chip, but it was bound to happen sooner or later.

if it is an oem USP wheel, it has paint on it. It's just silver paint. You can paint over that without primer. However, you are getting into pistriping and such. For that, go to a professional.

My wheels are painted by HRE and the only chips were from an idiot with an impact wrench, they are barely noticeable.

They are 4 years old now.

You did these yourself? They look like they came like that. How long did it take, would you say it was hard to do and how are they holding up?

The Duplicolor Rim paint boasts to be "track tested" and "designed to the challenges of the track"...It does dry pretty quickly, to the touch in an hour and cures in about a week.
