is it safe to have a car cover with cable lock on a car while being trailered?
I'm moving cross country and will be trailering the s4. Looking for the best protection for it.

Never trailered a car. Though the though of having a cover just make perfect sense...

that's what i'm thinking. my only concern is that the cover will flap around from the wind.

Duct Tape that son of a gun....Seriously just pinch the cover and shut the front doors on it. That should keep it from catching air.

    Re: Trailered Vehicle

Depends on the cover. If it is one of those Audi covers made for your car it will be very tight and snug. If it's aftermarket, it will flap around. Regardless, secure that thing down, because it will flap. My car was trailered from KY to CA.

    Re: Trailered Vehicle

No cover , it WILL get crap under it while being towed . The cover is going to rub back and forth no mater how well you strap it down . All it takes is 1/2" movement and the crap will scratch/rub off your paint . Give it a good wax and go.
Whats your tow vehicle ? If its a truck make sure the mudflaps are good.

    Re: Trailered Vehicle

couple rolls of blue tape the night before the car is picked up, pull it off as soon as the car is delivered, and put a coat of wax on before you tape it up

yeah my friend has had really bad luck trailering his car with a cover on it... He had waxed it before hand too and it still scratched his car. My recommendation is to give it a nice wax job and let it look beautiful while its being sent across country! DON'T USE A COVER! Where are you moving to?

    Re: Trailered Vehicle

Yeah I honestly don't see the big advantage to a road cover anyway, so long as it's not getting hit in the front by debris what's the problem?

I'm actually trailer it myself. I rented a 16" Budget Truck with hitch. Moving from Denver, CO to Tampa, Fl. I think i might just give it a good wax and blue tape it for the most part. front, rear and maybe roof.

    Re: Trailered Vehicle

If you can, pay for an enclosed trailer shipment. I shipped my zr1 across the country using intercity lines without any problems. But I've also towed a car in the open air with a uhaul trailer from FL from AZ last year and then brought another back from Fl to AZ. Everything was perfect for me. From what I read many people damage their cars towing them by having something that flaps against the car like a cover.

*Bottom line, if you can afford to have it shipped closed trailer please do it..*

if youre truly concerned with damaging the car, you could buy from 3m the protective film mfgs use to protect their cars during shipment... its white and it laminates body panels... or you could go to your local audi dealer that you service your vehicle in, and ask if they would be willing to part with a shipping cover:

I had to ship my wife's car. Have to haul my audi myself. If inclosed shipping wasn't so much, i'd do it. But due to already spending a ton of money moving had to take this route. I should be ok. Thanks for the advice fellas!

    Re: Trailered Vehicle

I wouldnt cover it while trailering it. I have a fitted coverking cover $400 and some odd dollars, fits good , and is bungee'd underneath , but it will blow off during stong winds. (I live in direct line of the Chesapeake bay) I would look into shrink wrap like they use when you winterize a boat. Just make sure its cleaned and waxed before you do anything....
