    oil grade for summer

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm doing an oil change during this weekend, I'm going to be changing to Royal Puple just to try it; I'm even going to dyno it to see if theres any hp/tq gains. The thing is, I live in Puerto Rico, and here the temperature is always around 85 degrees, and on summer its around 90 during the day. If I cant find any 0W40 Royal Purple, what other grade could I use? 5W40?

    Thanks,
    John

    Re: oil grade for summer

You should be concerned with the higher number. (40) That is the viscosity of this multi-grade oil at 100°C (212°F) operating temperature.

The 0W or 5W refers to what has historically been designated as "Winter". How well will the oil circulate in cold temperatures. A 0W oil is tested at -35°C, a 5W at -30°C and a 10W is tested at -25°C.

Multi grade oils like 5W40 designate how they flow (viscosity) in cold (5) versus warm (40). A specific oil will have high viscosity when cold and a low viscosity at the engine's operating temperature.

5W40 should be fine for you down in PR. I'm running 5W30 year-round and I'm up in the NorthEast.
