    Rear caliper tool?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi,

I had a friend replace my front brakes (rotor and pads) and he went to do the rear brakes and he wasn't able to do it because he didn't have the right tools to remove or loosen the caliper to get to the rotor. Does anyone know which tool is required to remove the rear calipers?

    Re: Rear caliper tool?

I have the ECS one if you want to borrow it.

    EDIT:
Basically the tool rotates the piston. The piston is set on a threaded rod so as you pull on the ebrake and release (or apply the brakes as the pads wear over time) the piston extends out a given amount. In order to compress the piston to fit new pads you have to rotate the piston. This tool locks in the locater marks on the piston and rotates it back in.

Front calipers you can literally just push the pistons in with a nice big C-Clamp.

    Re: Rear caliper tool?

ECS sells them like Doug said if you don't get to borrow it... it allows you to rotate and depress the piston for the new pad installation.. I found also if you remove the rotor and bolt the caliper back up the whole rotating and depressing action is a lot easier if you aren't messing with the lines..

I'm flattered that you would let me borrow it. But, the gas to drive to hartford and back would be worth it to purchase my own.

    THANKS!!!

    Re: Rear caliper tool?

It is not a problem. Always willing to help out.

Here's another suggstion: Stop by your local Advance Auto Parts store. They rent tools for a nominal fee. Upon completion of the task take the tool back and your rental fee is 100% reimbursed. I am fairly sure they rent rear disc caliper piston retractor tools.

I actually have a spring compressor from Advance that I rented back in May for my Jeep Cherokee front springs. Haven't finished the job and returned it yet. I'll finish it this weekend and then return the tool for my money back.

    Re: Rear caliper tool?

Thanks for the heads up, but I decided to purchase the tool through ECStuning. I can wait a few days for them to ship it for a quality part. I also have a couple of friends that have A4's as well and will need to use the tool when they do their brakes. I'll spend the extra money for piece of mind. =)

Sounds good to me . I wasn't sure if you wanted to purchase the tool so I threw that other suggestion out there. If you run into issues don't hesitate to contact me. Best of luck.

    Re: Rear caliper tool?

Also take your time with those 8mm caliper bolts.. I stripped the head out on one and had to drill and easy out it... no fun, if you remove the lower strut bolt and move the shock out of the way you can get a ratchet on the lower bolt no problem... GL

    Re: Rear caliper tool?

But then you bought it at HF. Wish I still had pictures of the HF Ball Joint tool I broke in HALF, and the second one I severely tweaked to try and finish the job.

    Re: Rear caliper tool?

Yeah...i'll spend the extra $15 for a superior quality product.

You can just tell the difference in the quality by the pictures. I can't imagine that those tools would last more than a few brake jobs.

Thanks for looking out tho, Gallep. Appreciate it.

Don't encourage him. I like to keep his self-esteem low. Makes him easier to work with.

    Re: Rear caliper tool?

You Silly Geese, they are the same tools, different colors and ECS has Foam on the lid to prevent the pieces from sliding around when tool kit is in transit. There's no difference in quality of the tools performance. No I will agree that HF does have some craptacular products, but this isn’t the case.

Disclaimer: ECS is still the shit

Doubtful. The shit always looks the same, but the metal they make it out of is always about as strong as tin. HF is great for finding manufacturers who copy an existing kit, make it out of shit, and sell it for a little less.

    Re: Rear caliper tool?

Ball joint tools take a beating. Rear brake caliper piston tools don't (unless the piston is seized and then you will spray pb blaster on it prior but by that point you're replacing the caliper anyway...). Couple bucks here, couple bucks there. Its up to the end user/customer. When I buy tools I plan on keeping them forever (esp specialty tools) so quality matters.

    Re: Rear caliper tool?

    doug,

I talked to my friend and he said it's a tool that you need even before getting to the point of using the tool you mentioned. he says its like a torx or allen bolt that holds the caliper bracket. He wants to know if it's a unique tool because he couldn't get to it due to the angle it was at.

    Re: Rear caliper tool?

just remove the lower strut bolt and you can get to the lower bolt, a recessed 8mm Allen head, same as the top. Take note on removal that the lower is longer than the top..

Yes. that is it. I believe its the lower caliper bracket bolt.

I never took mine out but bought new ones because I stripped one. I unbolted the upper one and moved it aside enough to get my rotor out. Once the rotor was turned I put it back in and pushed the caliper & bracket back and installed the upper bolt. Ghetto but it worked and I have close to 50k on those back brakes and working fine.
