B6 3.0L-What are the parts needed for timing belt job?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi guys,
My car is early 2002 model with 50k miles and thinking of the doing the timing belt job though a shop.

    Kits offer from ECS tuning.

    Option 1=$312
For customers that are on a tight budget or are looking to sell there car in the near future yet want to get their timing belt done for a piece of mind this 4-piece kit is for you.
    Kit comes with the following:
    • Timing belt
    • Tensioner roller
    • Relay roller (left bank)
    • Relay roller (right bank)

    Option 2=$631
With the great success of our early version Timing Belt Kit ECS has decided to offer a more complete kit with everything customers usually order when replacing their timingbeltKit comes with the following:
    • Timing belt
    • Relay roller (right bank)
    • Idler roller (;left bank)
    • Tensioner Roller
    • Water Pump
    • Thermostat Assembly
    • Accessory drive belt
    • 2 liters of G12 1.5 liter bottles
    • Valve cover gaskets (2) most kits on the market omit this from their kits
    • Tensioner dampner (shock)

    Questions:
1./ Can I just the get the option 1 plus the water pump only?
2./ What are the parts that must be replaced?
3./ Or What are the parts that are optional?
4./ Timing belt service recommandation for my car(2002) is 105k miles and 2004 is 75k miles, Can I do the timing belt service at around 70k miles (since I have only 50k miles)?

    Thanks

I strongly suggest you replace everything in there while it's apart. If not, one of the parts you didn't replace may go bad down the road and you'll have to spend more money on having it torn down again. The labor is the most expensive part.

Re: B6 3.0L-What are the parts needed for timing belt job?

Try this kit. Better pricing, same parts (minus thermostat). Does the 3.0L use a MAP-controlled thermostat like the 1.8T? I doubt you have to replace it.

    - 1 Timing Belt
    - 3 Timing Belt Tensioners / Idlers
    - 1 Heavy Duty Water Pump w/ Gasket (Improved Steel Impeller)
    - 1 Front Crank Seal
    - 2 Valve Cover Gaskets
    - 4 Camshaft Sprocket O'ring Seals with Circlips
    - 6 Liters Pentosin G12 PINK Antifreeze (4-1.5L Bottles – Appropriate Amount for Complete Cooling System Flush)
    - FREE Serpentine Belt

Re: B6 3.0L-What are the parts needed for timing belt job?

Anyone doing this job must have a "cam gear tool" it cost $400-$600 depending were you buy it. Most shop's have no idea this tool exists. Many have made the mistake of putting the car back together without setting the cam gears. The result is when the car turns over the valves will probably bend after hitting the pistons. I know of 4 persons this has happend to, all had bent valves. Then the shop tried to say they didn't do it and the story gets ugly from there. My advice is cover your ass and do the job right the first time. I recommend opt#2 in the post above.^^^

Re: B6 3.0L-What are the parts needed for timing belt job?

    Thanks for everyone's input.
I'm going to option 2 for sure now.

Do they(dealerships) use all OEM parts for timing belt service?

For what I know, both ECS tuning AND Blauparts's timing belt kits are not OEM parts (It is an oem quality products) except the Tensioner dampner (shock). Any differences in quality wise??

I'm on 50k miles(2002), is it ok to do timing belt service around 70k miles.

    Thanks

Re: B6 3.0L-What are the parts needed for timing belt job?

yes, also you may want to check the loob on the intake side of the cam i now on 2002 year this motor had wearing loobs and the dealer issued a bulletin for repair. I would only use audi parts and most dealerships when doing a T-belt replace water pump and a whole list of items like in option2 in the post above. This is the most important job to do on this motor and if its not done right you will pay dearly trying to clean up the mess and in most cases you'll be the one at fault and every shop will say its not us its your car.

Yes $4-$600 just for the tool not including the part list to do the T-job.
If the shop does not have the tool then they will charge you for it by rolloing it into the final invoice. To cover your ass you should ask the shop that is doing the job do you have the "cam gear tool" needed for this job. If they say no then tell them you need it to do the job. You can buy it and let them use it or ask if they will pick up the tab on getting one. Some how some way if the shop has to go out and buy this tool you can bet on them charging you for it and they will keep it when you paid for it. Just go to the dealer or a shop that already has this tool. I have my own Cam Gear Tool set it cost me $430 shipped.

Re: B6 3.0L-What are the parts needed for timing belt job?

You can rent the tools from blau parts:
    http://blauparts.com/proddetail.asp?...021-A&cat=4218

Guess you don't need the big cam gear lock plate that the 2.7T and 2.8s need?? I would have thought it was similar but the picture in that blauparts link says otherwise.. Hmm. 3.0 King will have to weigh in here..

I've done t-belts on the 2.7 and the 4.2 and never used any special tools.

Re: B6 3.0L-What are the parts needed for timing belt job?

Does anyone know if the dealerships are using the exactly same parts as those offering from ECS tuning AND Blauparts.com?
OR the dealerships use all O.E.M parts ONLY for Timing belt service?
How many types of Cam gear tool in the market? Are they all the same?

Re: B6 3.0L-What are the parts needed for timing belt job?

OEM. OEM Quality. They are all manufactured to the same specifications. Every water pump and TB kit I've installed on a 1.8T has been from manufacturers that provide to the OEM. So, they have been OEM or equivalent.

The stuff ECS and BlauParts sells is top notch and you can not go wrong with either vendor's products. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Re: B6 3.0L-What are the parts needed for timing belt job?

IMO. Ok, i'll say this. Sure you can do a t-jobs by marking all 6gears with a magic marker and make it a real easy job which in most cases is fine but if you are to follow the recommendations listed by audi for this motor at the time of service then the cam gear tool would apply. Bottom line its an audi, and ain't a damn thing cheap about audi.

Re: B6 3.0L-What are the parts needed for timing belt job?

I am planning on doing my Timing Belt sometime next week. I have a 2002 b6 with 99k and the owner before told me that he did the timing belt. I don't think he was telling the truth. so I'm going to do it. I will try my best to do a write up about it (DIY). wish me luck , because lots of people are telling me it's a very hard job. the whole front bumper has to be taken off plus the valve cover est..........

    I need that tool!!!!!
