    Oh The Humanity!

I hate construction crews with a passion. They are so inconsiderate to motorists. Now I will admit there are plenty of people who are inconsiderate right back. But I don't fall into that category. So I am on a two lane road right by my place, leaving for work this morning. There has been construction going on for the past couple of weeks on this upcoming intersection. But it has been mostly unobtrusive to the road. So I haven't taken much more caution over when I see a construction zone on the highway.

So I am coming around this blind curve at about 40 mph. Get halfway around and there is a semi just freakin’ parked against the curb there, completely in the street. No flashers or anything, just straight parked, like he's been there for weeks. And of course there is a car coming the other direction. I know I am going to hit somebody. So I decided the stationary semi is the lesser of two evils. I'm obviously not going to damage it, and I really don't want to hit someone else probably just on their way to work. No use in ruining two peoples' day. I scrape the semi so close, I swear I have maybe a millimeter between it and my passenger mirror. I manage to not clip the semi, which is amazing to me. So I think I made it out scott free. But just as I get to the front of the semi, there is one of those big construction barriers sticking out maybe 2-3 inches past the side of the trailer. And I just effin slammed it. So I am just sitting there at the light imagining what the side of my car looks like. I got fairly lucky considering. Have some scuff marks down the fender and the door that will need to be touched up. Busted the crap out of my mirror. The "glass" is all shattered and the back of the mirror is cracked halfway down. Luckily the mirror did not get ripped off the door. So I'm not that guy driving around with his mirror hanging off cause he doesn't know how to drive and/or take the mirror off. But agitated none the less. No pics for now, you'll have to wait until I get home. I probably made this sound much worse than it is. But I know you all feel my pain of even really scratching the Audi. Door dings make me cringe, so I am not happy about this.

I'll have to get a new mirror housing and glass, and have that painted. Also will need to have the deep scratches touched up. But It's going to be right at or just less than my $500 deductible. So it's pretty much a wash. My mirror is still functional. So I think for now I am going to buy a new piece of glass to pop in, and just live with the ugly for a little bit. I'll hold out to see if I can come across another dolphin grey mirror. Otherwise I'll have to spring for a new one.

that blows.....shit was illegal too by the truck, should have called him in. Welcome to wonderful summer road construction in CO. Most asphalt plants close here in the winter so they rush like a mofo for 8 months out of the year.

    Re: Oh The Humanity!

Yeah, I wasn't too happy with the trailer. He has been parked in the turn lane for the last week. As the dozers have just been scooping up dirt and dumping right into it. But he has been entirely in the turn lane and surrounded by the orange barriers. Well today I guess they were clearing dirt about 20 feet farther back and someone decided that was just too far for the dozers to drive to dump dirt. So he parked along side of them just with his nose in the turn lane. And no cones or anything to signal his presence there..................

It's not a "contruction zone" They are working off the road. There are no posted signs because it's not road work. But if they are gonna park a semi in the road on a blind curve, they need to have cones layed out in advance of the truck, that is a law. And slow down? Dude, I was going 40 mph.

    Re: Oh The Humanity!

Dude - if you were within the speedlimit and there are no posted construction signs, you might have a leg to stand on that the construction company is at fault.

Here in my state if you have anything on the road that isn't in transit then there are standards that have to be followed. I often have to utilize tractor trailers, lowboys, etc and in order for me to have them stop for any lenght of time = and I'm talking anything longer than a "walk around", I HAVE to have the following: Class 2 or 3 barricades, cones or A-frames fading to another drive lane, 1 or 2 (depending on wether or not I have traffic "sharing" a lane) people in reflective vests (used to be orange - now they are caution yellow) with flags. That is the freakin minimum just for me to offload sound equipment and things from trucks when it has to be done from the street. I'm sure you can go to your State Department of Transportation website and find what your states minimums are. I'd go ahead and file, if you haven't already, a delayed accident report and see if you can't get the construction company to foot your bill.

    Just a thought.

Like I said, lucky it was only this minor. Just really effin' annoyed about it. If I was on my way home from work, instead of on the way too. I'd of reported that truck in a second. But with the minor damage, it just wasn't worth it.

Just scuffs, can be buffed out

Bingo, before I bought the Audi to DD, I had a lifted Jeep Cherokee to drive around everyday. It averaged 11-12 mpg, so something that could hit 500 on a single tank was pretty noteworthy for me. Now the XJ is just a toy.

It seems like every road here in the springs that I can travel to-from work is getting tar-n-chipped. They can't pave it and the road usually comes out worse then it did before getting "fixed".

If you ever wanted a set of S4 mirror caps, now would be a good time to upgrade (alwasy look for an oppurtunity to upgrade).

Damn, I feel your pain. Its the little shit that hurts the most because its not covered by insurance. I've had 1 or 2 of those so far. Really eats at you. Especially if you dont get it fixed but I think yours is basically a must with the mirror and the scratches can maybe be buffed or something. Good luck anyway. Be happy you didnt actually hit the semi cause then you'd be replacing alot of your front end.

Which is bullshit. A blind curve, the first thing you'd of seen was the semi. No construction signs leading up to it. I was very aware of my surroundings. They included a completely empty street all the way until a parked 18 wheeler came into view.

Yeah, I love that Colorado quick fix. Grade the road, lay down a shit ton of gravel, tar it. Repeat in 2-3 years. This is why I love Highlands Ranch. The richies spent money, concrete roads everywhere.

I had considered the S4 caps. But shit them things are pricey!

Sorry to hear this but glad the car doesn't look too bad!

If you decide to not go with the S4 caps I have my old DG mirror caps I could sell you?! I'd have to see how much shipping would be but they are in great condition and are just collecting dust now.

As for the actual mirror I'd just pick up some blind spot ones from ECS or w/e!

I know right. I live up the road a tick at Oswego, but then I have to make a left across Lincoln to make Peoria. So I go the back way, that way I get the light.
