I hate construction crews with a passion. They are so inconsiderate to motorists. Now I will admit there are plenty of people who are inconsiderate right back. But I don't fall into that category. So I am on a two lane road right by my place, leaving for work this morning. There has been construction going on for the past couple of weeks on this upcoming intersection. But it has been mostly unobtrusive to the road. So I haven't taken much more caution over when I see a construction zone on the highway.
So I am coming around this blind curve at about 40 mph. Get halfway around and there is a semi just freakin’ parked against the curb there, completely in the street. No flashers or anything, just straight parked, like he's been there for weeks. And of course there is a car coming the other direction. I know I am going to hit somebody. So I decided the stationary semi is the lesser of two evils. I'm obviously not going to damage it, and I really don't want to hit someone else probably just on their way to work. No use in ruining two peoples' day. I scrape the semi so close, I swear I have maybe a millimeter between it and my passenger mirror. I manage to not clip the semi, which is amazing to me. So I think I made it out scott free. But just as I get to the front of the semi, there is one of those big construction barriers sticking out maybe 2-3 inches past the side of the trailer. And I just effin slammed it. So I am just sitting there at the light imagining what the side of my car looks like. I got fairly lucky considering. Have some scuff marks down the fender and the door that will need to be touched up. Busted the crap out of my mirror. The "glass" is all shattered and the back of the mirror is cracked halfway down. Luckily the mirror did not get ripped off the door. So I'm not that guy driving around with his mirror hanging off cause he doesn't know how to drive and/or take the mirror off. But agitated none the less. No pics for now, you'll have to wait until I get home. I probably made this sound much worse than it is. But I know you all feel my pain of even really scratching the Audi. Door dings make me cringe, so I am not happy about this.
I'll have to get a new mirror housing and glass, and have that painted. Also will need to have the deep scratches touched up. But It's going to be right at or just less than my $500 deductible. So it's pretty much a wash. My mirror is still functional. So I think for now I am going to buy a new piece of glass to pop in, and just live with the ugly for a little bit. I'll hold out to see if I can come across another dolphin grey mirror. Otherwise I'll have to spring for a new one.
