    its time for a clutch....

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
so as things are actually starting to shape up with my car, im going to need to do a clutch within the next month or so. my "big plans" are to eventually go with either a gtrs or gt28rs eliminator kit and would like to do the clutch job with this in mind. i was looking at awe's stage 2 southbend kit which uses an OFE clutch, sachs pressue plate, and lightwieght flywheel. they say it is rated at 350ft/lbs. i was wondering if that will be suitable for my future BT plans or if i should get something rated a little higher?

if you need to know my performance mods they are as follows:

    racetec fmic
    r1 dv
2.5in custom magnaflow exhaust turbo back

and of course ill be getting new injectors and software when BT so those dont matter.

its nice having those supporting mods together so you can just slap the kit together isn't it?

Anyway 350tq is nice, I would imagine that should hold. I guess theres only 1 way to find out ha

are you doing the install yourself?

Only thing I would recommend is a Southbend FE SS

No ones making you buy that clutch, if you want to try something else by all means go for it and relay back how it fairs to big power. With certain parts, there is no reason to sway from what is PROVEN to work, and work well. Will other things work, absolutely, if you want to see what else does (or doesn't) work, have at it!

Of course not. I was thinking the same as you though, something that is proven.

it is very nice. haha and no im not doing the install myself because it would most likely be on jackstands. ill probably have the audi dealer my company owns do it at employee pricing (which should be next to nothing, because i got over 50% off my TB job there )

how much and where can i pick one up? hows the engagement vs stock? i would ideally like something similar to stock. maybe a little more abrupt engagement but not much. thanks!

OFE FE is $625 IIRC, engagement for either the FE or OFE is much different than stock, slightly stiffer and quicker however the engagement point is near the floor (much better for spirited driving). If you want something very similar to stock but will hold slightly more power, OFE HD is what you want.

FWIW, Ive yet to see anyone with a FE or OFE SS dislike its driveability or engagement!

Re: its time for a clutch....

FE SS and forget it... southbend will resurface your flywheel for free, no need for a lightweight really..... engagement point is near the floor (*unlike stock) and engagement is very instant as well but u get used to it really quick

since you plan to go BT, you will need the FE SS... ofe or fe HD wont hold the power

a lot of people say the FE SS is tough to drive but my 115lb wife learned to drive on it without any trouble

well heres another question for you...if the clutch engages so close to the floor, is there still all that extra travel in the pedal? that would be the suck.

i also found this spec stage 2 clutch: http://www.034motorsport.com/product...ducts_id=16409

rated at 425ft/lbs...not bad. should easily hold gtrs/gt28rs.

Re: its time for a clutch....

For a GTRS I would suggest the Stage 4 for a daily driver with some racing or the stage 5 if you plan on racing it even more. The stage 4 has organic material on one side so you will find that you can slip the clutch if needed, the stage 5 is med metal on both sides so it is going to be a more on/off feel.

If you want to go with a Spec you would be better off with something like the stage 3+ which uses a full face disk, their stage 3 uses a 6 puck. The stage 2 and stage 2+ have kevlar on the disk, you have to be very careful while during the break in period when dealing with a kevlar disk. Same goes for the SB stage 2 since it too uses kevlar.

No, but I can get them from both Purems and Eurocode. I have known people that have tried them but they never seemed to hold like they expected, but that was some time ago.
