be the "grey man" means be the guy that the instructors don’t know exist. In other words don’t stick out like a sore thumb, don’t be an individual, don’t be the platoon joker or smart ass. If the staff know or remember your name without looking at you name tag you are not being a grey man, and every time there is something to be done like taking out the trash or shit detail, guess who they will pick, not the grey man cuz he doesn’t exist. In the military we love to chew out individuals!

Re: Im leaving for bootcamp soon and im going to miss my car!

That's terrible advice about being the grey man! That's like saying 'Go through life unnoticed'...

My drill instructors appreciated when any of us showed true confidence and an ability to perform at a higher level than "grey". It actually resulted in both respect and better duty.

Anyone that scared of being challenged should reconsider becoming a Marine (or any branch for that matter).

    Good luck man and thanks!

yes that’s right the military is all about individuals and about stepping all over your team mates to get to the top (cuz you have confidence, lol) and look the best while everyone behind you is struggling. I think NOT!

    1. I never mentioned anything about going through life unnoticed, we are talking about BOOT CAMP, not life.

    2. " true confidence and an ability to perform at a higher level than "grey". "

Do you mean having confidence in being a jack ass like making jokes or always fucking up or being late or loosing you kit cus that will piss of all you instructors off and they will know who you are very quickly. If you show confidence in you cock sucking abilities guess who they will pick to suck their cock first, not the grey man. What I am understanding from you confidence comment is the hypnotically if you have to ability to polish you boots shinier the rest of you platoon, that your staff will see the difference and appreciate it, hell know. IMO you better make sure you dull your boots a little to match the rest or shine the rest of the platoons boots as shiny as yours so you DONT STICK OUT LIKE A GOD DAMN INDIVISUAL! AM I CLEAR?

whats your MOS going to be? If you have any questions feel free to hit me up. I spent 9 years on active duty Marine Corps Infantry and just got off AD in Feb. Serving the remainder of my time in the Reserves.

MCRD San Diego.... Good luck! Its not so bad. I was there 8 years ago lol! Believe it or not that will be the easiest time you will have in the Marine Corps. You're ordered to do everything, from waking up to going to sleep, eating, exercising, studying, showering, even thinking! Just don't take it personally when the Drill Instructors insult you.

And BTW, when it comes to having a squad leader position or guide position in bootcamp, all the other recruits will hate. If your in that situation, don't worry about them. Its just bootcamp. They'll get over it.

    Geez airborneriflema, a little thin-skinned aren't you?

It's obvious we disagree on how a group should function, whether it be a platoon or football team. I've always found that when each individual performs at their own highest level, the group as a whole operates at a higher level.

I definitely wasn't suggesting that anyone be a c0ck sucking jokester. Gauging by your reaction, it didn't work out too well for you...

Once again, good luck CHR1SXD and Semper Fi!

don't take advice from this guy... the bold comment is just one of the MANY differences between the Marines and the chair force.

you do NOT want to go unnoticed... one thing I learned during my earlier years in the Marine Corps is that if your superiors (D.I.'s included) pick you to do anything on a constant basis it is because they know the JOB WILL GET DONE, this should not be taken as an insult. You will learn, when you become an NCO that getting by as the "grey man" will not get you far in this career...

I'm a PO 1st Class in the Navy, 8 years of active duty service and counting. Welcome to the family!

x2 on not listening to that Airborne dude. Always excel in everything you do in the military.

"Nobody's perfect, but with the pursuit of perfection, you achieve excellence.." - funny enough, my company commander in boot camp told me this, and it has always been my bread and butter ever since!

It does suck not seeing the B7 for a few months...

Air Force guy here and although you've convinced yourself of what you may about your fellow services we still bleed the same blood in the war. I'm a veteran of 3 separate 7 month tours to Iraq and just like some of the people you've seen and been part with even there in Hawaii not everyone stays in the rear. I'm sure we could sit here and share our personal stories I know I have my own experiences that you would perhaps not believe that us Air Force guys experience but the truth is we all rely on each other in some fashion through all of this.

Good luck in boot camp and may angels fly over you and with you when your name is called to board that plane. And you can have your Audi back after boot camp

Come on, you know us Chair Forcers just play golf and drink margaritas all day in Hawaii.

    Good luck recruit!!!!

I heard they took away the reaper out there...I guess no broken ankles for you.

When you graduate, we'll welcome you to the family.

    1. I never mentioned anything about going through life unnoticed, we are talking about BOOT CAMP, not life.

AM I CLEAR?
I think in the defense of airborne, I think he WAS just talking about basic and not being out in the fleet. When I went through basic, I was constantly picked on, the mere fact that I was a fatbody didn't help me much. I guess depending on whom you talk to, being the "invisible" individual worked well for most, while being the "marked" individual worked well for some. In my case, since I was the marked fatbody, I ended up learning a lot. I lost ~60+lbs (came in at 220, came out at 155), came out near the top of my platoon, held my post as 3rd squad leader and kicked ass throughout basic.

The point is, try to blend in with the rest of your platoon during basic. If you happened to get "marked" than just tough it out, do what your told and don't gripe about it. Once you hit the fleet, you'll see why they did what they did, and just continue doing what they instilled in you. 5years later and being out from honorably discharged from AD (reserve now), I still remember all the shit my drill instructors taught me, but now I get to pass it along to my Cpls and the Jr. Marines.

EDIT: Although I do have to admit, for one to be an airborne ranger, I would've figured that good grammer and spelling skills would be necessary to write out those SMEAC reports.

I did 8yrs in the navy and got out as E-6 back in '03. I know what it feels like being away from family and friends, and your car too.

To the OP: Good luck, be safe and fun while your at it.

LOL That's funny. One of my uncles was in the Chair Force and my dad and 3 other uncles were in the Army. I'd never heard the Chair Force comment before, they are going to love that

    And CHR1SXD, good luck bro!
