Vag comm is a software package that will talk to the OBD2 computer. It provides an interface for the end user to access diagnostic data, create logs, and change certain values. Basically, it is an interpreter of the machine language inside the ECU, in a format that is organized in sections. Sort of like a Hex editor, but Vag Comm goes a little further by grouping the machine language values with an interface. Normally, the VAG (volkswagen Audi Group) data in the ECU is inaccessible and is encoded, so the Vag Comm decodes the raw machine data for you.
When changing the values, as in the convenience setting that the other poster has talked about, you need to enter the correct replacement value that corresponds to the proper numerical values that will turn on or turn off certain switches.
So yes, you can get the engine codes from the Vag Comm and you can also change other factors/values.
The software interfaces with the hardware via OBD2 to USB or RS232 serial.
