    Is it the turbo???

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
This has happened a few times to me, I'm new to the car, and to turbos.

While driving spirited, sometimes in the higher gears, 4th/5th, I may let off the gas for a bit and then roll back on the throttle and I feel a slight boom/clunk sound. Hard to describe, but my only guess is that the turbo is getting caught between winding down and then suddenly needs to wind back up.

Does this make any sense, is this normal, is my car busted, am I an idiot?

Okay, thanks. The boom/clunk happens when the throttle is being rolled back on, is that when pressure would be released, and do other ever feel this?

    Thanks for the response!

maybe its your downpipe hitting the aluminum frame piece? do you have stock dp/exhaust? or are you chipped? maybe you need a snub mount to compensate for the increase in engine/drivetrain movement

Sounds like the drivetrain jerking, assuming you're Quattro. I get this when I let off the gas while leaving it in gear, and when letting out the clutch quickly into the next higher gear.
    Ignorance is bliss.

Yes, quattro. Drivetrain sounds like a plausible answer. I will lift off the gas, then go to roll back on and there's a split second delay then I feel a jerk. I have never had quattro, and never felt this in any other car before.

    Thanks for the response!

    Re: Is it the turbo???

Yeah, that's all it is since Quattro is an all time awd system.

One thing people do to help fix this problem (if you think of it as a problem) is buy a new snub mount. It installs in under 30 minutes, is easy to do, VERY cheap at about $30-40... The snub mount is just a big bushing that is the front engine mount. The only bad thing about it is the car will vibrate a tad during idle since there is less drivetrain slack, but it's not a big deal if it is installed correctly.

PureMS, APR, and ECS all make one. Search around and compare prices

btw, here are some DIY's to install one:

    Re: Is it the turbo???

I dont think is has that much to do with quattro and more to do with the fact that it is just part of a car with a manual transmission because there is no torque converter, it will be harder to hide throttle movements and transmission slack
