    New 2008 option question

Posted this in Detailing forum but need an answer in a couple hours. I will be picking up a 2008 A4 and one of the options I can pay more for is a "special" chemical that bonds to the paint to prevent dirt or something. I think its called something like Xylon. Anyways, will it be worth the $600 it will cost to get it applied? Does it really work or is it BS? I will be getting a black car BTW.

    Re: New 2008 option question

many different companies make this stuff...i forget what i've got, but it contains teflon or somethin. basically, it's supposed to protect your paint from bird crap, tree sap, or any other kind of discoloration. check with your sales guy or get a brochure to see what they say it protects against. really though, it doesn't matter, because what you're buying is a warranty on the paint. ask your sales dude if that dealership would be the one to perform any paint work should the car need it and the work would fall under the coating's guarantee/warranty. if so, cool, otherwise skip it. i bought it cause of that reason - anything happens to my paint, i can take it back to that dealer, get an Audi loaner, and the dealer has to repaint it, not some random body shop.

as a bonus, the paint is easier to clean with this stuff applied properly.

I feel embarrassed honestly to admit I got xylon but I will say Yes, it's much easier to clean. Bad weather the week I got my A3 meant that someone else's car slid on snow/ice while it was parked and scuffed the crap out of my side mirror - per the detail guys at the dealer, 'if you didn't have xylon we would have had to repaint your mirror, but instead we can just do This now...' - and he proceeded to just take a towel and swiped my mirror once, bam, scrape gone.

I can't say I'm that lucky All the time and I did feel like I was being scammed or something by buying the option but having just sold my 2005 Arctic White A4, in 2008, and seeing how much my brand new 2008 Ibis White A3 looked soooo much prettier than my old A4 did since the paint was brand new, I bought xylon on the spot just for the paint warranty, your paint Will fade. Especially when you drive over Snoqualmie pass all the time for holidays, etc.
