What clutch to run on GT28's?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have done some research, and am debating on what clutch to run on a GT series car, fully built bottom end, looking to make power and get it to the wheels.

I am looking for a "streetable" yeah I know you chuckled at me... set up that will be able to hold the power.

I understand i will not have a OEM stock feeling clutch in the car, but i am looking for the best feeling/best performing set up.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

VAST always runs their stage 3 ceramic clutch on their GT cars...

Don't waste your money . . GT cars don't run long enough to go through a clutch. ha ha.

    j/k.

    I couldn't resist that one.

I will be trying out a new setup on my GT car really soon, one of a kind right now but should be awesome.. Clutch master stage 4 6 puck sprung hub with a special heavy duty pressure plate and a single mass steel flywheel 17.5lbs....

I was actually considering a Clutchnet 6 puck sprung and HD pressure plate... but I just want to do a bit more research and hear what others are doing, and weigh their feedback.

When will you be running that set up?

I'm running South Bend Stage 5 full feramic face and RS4 PP. Holds 600 ft-lbs torque and clutch feels similar to stock. Engagement can be ultra-smooth (even picky girlfriend doesn't notice it) or it can be extremely harsh if you drop it (grabs like a motherfuck!).

vast stage 3 feels great. its pretty hard, but so is the stocker. it grabs well, and engages very smoothly. its not broken in enough yet to launch and see how it grabs, but i heard great things about it which is why i went with it. if my tb tensioner wasn't defective, i'd be finishing up the break-in process as we speak :(

Re: What clutch to run on GT28's?

Where talking about a gt car, big difference when it comes to finding a clutch.. Stage 3 cars can run most clutches trouble free, but when making large power finding a clutch isn't that easy, especially when most singles can't really be trusted past 500wtq.. The question should be i plain on running X amount of power and will be driving the car this hard..

I have a VAST stage 3 for my new setup. I'm thinking that will do the trick.

You don't think a VAST will hold? They claim to use it on their GT600.

I think, but could be wrong, that hes reffering to other pieces breaking. The rear crossmember is pretty weak in our cars. You may want to see if a machine shop could make you a stronger one. Ive been thinking about it but havent invested any real time into it because of how busy I am with other things.

When my rear end broke it was all do to the crossmember breaking. They (stealership) said it was due to the rear end slamming so quick. When that breaks, the transfer case cant hold all of the weight and that too will break. Then shit hits the fan. Axles break, drive shafts shear off, etc.

Do any of you GT guys that plan on running the car in the 1/4 have the JHM rebuild or Stasis with the new synchros? Prolly going to be my next step before taking the power up anymore than 3+.

Re: What clutch to run on GT28's?

I am running the original tranny, which is still very smooth at 80k.

I have it coupled with the basics, 034 tranny mounts, JHM gear, yada yada. I won't do a rebuild until I have a terrible 1-2 shift and eat the gearbox up. I also have fresh new axels, but haven't looked much farther than that.

Re: What clutch to run on GT28's?

Honestly, I plan on running the car close to its maximum capability as far as power... I will be reinforcing my subframes, and other pressure points in the chassis, as I have done on my other cars. I am hoping that a 6 puck sprung setup will hold, but I might just have to go with a twin disc. I will probably try a conventional set up 1st though, as I will have to break in the motor/clutch/and associated parts anyway...

If the clutch holds on a 5K launch, 500 ft-lb on a sticky track and good tires, and everything else is stock in the drivetrain, something else is going to break. So at the end of the day, a clutch will be the least of your worries.

This I know... that is why I will be upgrading most of the drive train as well, as time goes on, as I have with my other cars. I would rather slip a clutch than break a transmission or diff., but I don't want to have something that slips say on the highway under hard acceleration, because it just can't hold, nor do I want to wear through clutches every 5k miles. I know how to drive very well, and am very easy on my cars even when driven hard... I just want something that will hold up and do a good job.

No it's not the 034 flywheel, they dont make one for the s4.. They do make one for the 91 coupe which will fit the s4.. With the 034 you cant use the s4 pressure plate you have to use the 91 stuff, with the custom piece i have you do use the s4 pressure plate
