Where do you do most of your highway driving Tip, S, or D? i personally love driving in S on highways because it lets the engine rev higher before the shift, quicker response, and faster acceleration.

I know exactly wat they mean i was just wondering wat the AT community drives on the highway, in my post i stated exactly why i like driving in S. my post didnt say "should i drive in S or D" nor did it say ANYTHING about fuel economy. Next time please keep your ignorance to yourself. Thank you

Tip. on a cold start, i'll stay in D for the first couple miles, then slide over to Tip and use that until i reach my destination's parking lot, at which point i'm back to D. i like the control of Tip, and that in Tip, the torque converter stays locked. i'm just too lazy to go full manual and dink with a clutch.

torque converter explanation: i read this a month or so back from a dude's post thinking his DIS wasn't working. here's what i mean: be on the interstate in 6th in D at a steady speed. now push your go pedal down a little and you'll see the revs jump 500+, but the DIS still reports you as in 6th. now slide over to Tip and watch your revs go back down. this is the torque converter opening up to allow the engine to spin higher and produce more power (...which is essentially lost with the TC opened?)

bah, tip & watch your revs. can't burn it up or stall it, the tranny will force a shift before you go kaboom.

I drive in 'D' all the time, unless some idiot wants to cut me off w/o signaling, I full throttle in 'S' mode and give them a taste of my Audi ass.

For my driving Ihave actually found the best mpg to be driving in sport around town. This prevents it from going up to 6th at like 40mph, and when you accellerate lightly it actually sucks more gas. So I drive mostly in S. However once on the freeway/highway and up to speed I change to D so that the engine will then shift to 6th to maximize mpg at high speeds.

i also hate to break it to all your AT guys but "tip and S" are not really any faster either. they just feel faster because of the lower gear selection. your car will be just as fast as long as you're flooring it

Worst mileage in S bro, known fact that it keeps you in gear longer higher RPMS, going 40 in 6th uses less gas than going 40 in 3rd. Just my .2

I use Drive when I'm in traffic or warming up the car, if there is any open road at all I use Sport. I shift when I do really spirited driving and I need to downshift often

To save gas around town I drive in D then shift up a gear once I'm crusin at a speed I want to keep, the trick is to keep it below 2000 and in D you usually are slightly above it, you should see a ~5-10% gain in fuel economy on the read-out if you stick to it. But I usally get bored after a while and floor it in S from a red light lol

the manual trans will always be better than the tip. But for those who have the tip, like myself, I usually put my car in D until the car reaches operating temperature, then drive in S. the paddleshifters allow decent downshifting when needed. if im in certain traffic then i might throw it in D if I am not using the trans to brake or slow down the car. Pushing a turbocharged car thats tuned when its not warmed up is a recipe for problems. if paddleshifters were not an option then i would have bought a stick. but then again, if i was buying a car with a stick i would not have bought an A4. just my .02...
