    how bad is rubbing?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
just got my coils installed and i am rubbing like a mad man, especially with passengers.

how bad is it to rub? i imagine the tires take most of the beating? any threat to the car/suspension?

in any event, i've got an appointment in a week to get raised and realigned.

    thanks!

    Re: how bad is rubbing?

I also had a rubbing issue, I removed screw that everyone talks about in the front. I also changed to 225 tires, and now I get no rub what so ever. I recommend this setup highly, I am 25.1 up front and 25 1/4 in the rear. I was also frustrated, but with a little work I got all the kinks worked out. What is your height? What is your wheel offset I assume 35 that is why I had trouble also.

    Re: how bad is rubbing?

i am at 25" in back and about 25.25 in front. rubbing is much more a problem in back.

i have 35 offset, which actually looks great as i don't think it needed spacers to be flush.
but i'm running 245 width tires, so they're running pretty flush with the fender.

    Re: how bad is rubbing?

^^thats your problem, running flush isn't a good idea. I was running flush with 245 tires with spacers and it caused rubbing going drive ways....if you run 235 or 225 you would not have a problem...

Also, tires will take the rubbing, just it will cause damage to the fender liners and potentially the fender itself. When the fender gets hit by the tire, it will cause the fender to start to be pointy. On my b5, I would rub and over a period of time the fender started to become sharp and it would slice my tires, slowly.... This is the only danger I can foresee happening. Say if you take a corner wayyyy to fast and your fender is sharp your tire COULD pop or rip a slice off the tire, thus needing you to replace it.

Fender roller is your friend. You should use it and see if it cures the problem.

    Re: how bad is rubbing?

I would recommend the smaller tires, really we have AWD cars and 225 is plenty to keep traction, also brand makes a huge difference go for Toyo Proxes 4's these tiers are narrower for some reason even on the 235. Also you can't really roll the rear fender so I recommend either getting smaller tires or get a higher offset. I could not be happier now that I don't rub, even fully loaded with 4 people and loaded back (I have avant) I have no rub even on the biggest bumps on these great CA roads.

    Re: how bad is rubbing?

you can do the screw thing up front and the rears are most likely just the carpet in the wheel wells. Mine still do it a little. I would just wait, the tire will wear them down. You can also trim them. it wont damage the tire at all. I wouldnt suggest going with 225 tires. It actually decreases the overall diameter of the wheel. Your speedo is going to be off.

    Its bad, really bad.

Frame problems, tire wear, CV joints all sorts of problems, even torsen diff problems if one set of tires has more constant resistance that the other (aka one end of the car rubbing)

    Re: how bad is rubbing?

I've heard of people rubbing badly every day, and then where the tires contact the paint on the fenders heated it up so much the paint began to bubble and expose the bare metal. It makes your tires ugly so you have to sand them down smooth all the time, and will cut into your sidewall eventually and make the tire junk long before the tread wears off...

Remove the screw, raise your coilovers, roll your fenders.
    Ignorance is bliss.

Yeah, seriously raise your rear up. Cause you've screwed up your car in 2 different ways and the rubbing is only an indicator that you've messed things up.

    Re: how bad is rubbing?

raise is definitely coming. it's already scheduled as soon as i could get it in. just needed to know how little to drive between now and then.

integration -- what are the two different ways? suspension is too low i assume is one... what's the other? thanks, you always seem to have the most insight on matters of suspension.

    Re: how bad is rubbing?

i did. i also got raised about half an inch. driving solo i don't get anymore rubbing. i have rubbed once when driving with 3 passengers + me, but it was a pretty big dip.

i really need to step down to 235 on tire width though because i think i'd clear safely.

had the same problem but i raised the rear and had min rubing nothing big and then took it for alignment and for some reason the rear lowered again and im back to bad rubbing going in again to raise , but that does not make sense ? alignment and the gap between the fender and tire is gone

prior to the alignment you most likely had alot of negative camber so the top of the wheels tucked into the fender. When they fixed it, the camber was adjusted out and the wheel rubbed again.

i dont think a quick brush of the tire on the carpet would be considered constant resistance...if his tire was dragging on metal enough to hinder the movement on the car then it may cause one of your problems.

I'm 25" front and rear with ET35 wheels 235 tires and no rubbing anywhere. Get a good alignment. I do have 1100lb springs in the rear and that may help too.

    Re: how bad is rubbing?

There is a few different ways to fix the rubbing. Ill go from easiest to most difficult.

    1. Fender Rolling / Flaring
    2. Camber adjustment
    3. Raise the car slightly
    4. Change tire size
