Magnaflow is Magnaflow right? They all sound the same on the 2.8 no matter the part #

I just thought I would try to save some money and pick up a regular old oval can Magnaflow muffler (http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku) add a straight through Resinator and then have my exhaust guy weld up a turn down. Maybe try a little differnt setup just to be different.

    $70 for the Magnaflow
    $20 for a Res.
    $70 for the welding
    $20 for a turn-down tip.

    $180 done

But I was wondering if all Magnaflows sounded the same, do they all sound the same with just differnet inlets/outlets/ tips or does each muffler have a totally different sound?

Also, would I want to get a 2.25 Dia. muffler to butt weld to the stock pipes or 2.5 to slip over the stock pipe and then weld up?

    Thanks guys!

It is not always about the sound. Take this into consideration. An exhaust with a single 2.5" will have more restriction than an exhaust with dual 2.5" outlets.

I have used a magnaflow 14862 with 2.25 inlet and dual 3 in tips. If looked pretty damn good. Flowmaster middle muffler with 2.5 piping. 3 in test/downpipe (which was too large diameter). It was a pretty loud setup, my 2.5 borla is much quieter (and no drone). It can be tough to get a good sound without drone, get ready to experiment (and have lots of drone!).

Is it really that cheap? I think that changing the exhaust is like $700up.

^^ he is keeping the stock piping, just changing out the muffler and resonator and tips. It gets more expensive like your 600-700$ mark when running bigger piping like the borla exhaust ect..

That means I can get a "better" sound with a cheaper price?

yes, just not better performance. There are gains to be had from running larger piping, and different sound also.

Larger piping will increase the horsepower, right?

depends how big. in this case, bigger isn't alwasy better. The biggest I'd recommend for 2.8L maybe 2.5in.

Yeah, the way he is doing it won't do much, but also won't cost much. The setup I made with magnaflow, flowmaster and 3/2.5 inch piping ended up costing over $700. I was not entirely pleased. It did make the car quite a bit peppier and spool quicker.

My vote, shell out the 650-1000 and get a real exhaust system. Hell maybe you can find one used.

O yeah, to the op, get the same size diameter as stock piping, you won't be able to fill in the gap with a .5" bigger diameter, it will be a headache.

On a non-turbo car the gains are not that noticeable, but for a turbo car, I see a lot of "claims" of up to 40hp+ by running a testpipe and opening up the exhaust on larger turbos, which I also don't doubt. On a little ko3, these gains are minimal though, but still there.

for anything smaller than a GTRS, I wouldn't go smaller than 2.5. Anything bigger would be an over kill.

Exactly what i was thinking, I didnt figure it wasnt worth $700 for a custom exhaust and not be able to feel a difference.

If I were you, I would do what I did. Get the magnaflow street series with tips universal muffler #14816, a small straight through resonator put in with a custom made catback system. I just had this done last week and the outcome is great. The inlet on this muffler is 2.25", which is the same as the stock exhaust, you don't want 2.5", trust me. and the tips on it are 3.5" double wall twin tips. Looks great and sounds better. Total cost: $338 with tax, muffler, resonator, and the entire catback system all fabbed up. Worth every penny. Don't get a turn down in back, it'll look like sh*t. Just remember, you get what you pay for.

One other thing, don't just put a muffler on the stock piping. I was talking to a guy with a 2.8 a few weeks ago and when I was telling him I wanted a new exhaust he told me that unless I was going to do a full catback with either no resonator or a small one, it wasn't worth it. He told me that he put his magnaflow muffler on his stock piping and he had issues with his engine cutting out on him so he ended up getting a catback made. I guess it messes something up with the sensors.

So what size is stock? I thought stock was 2.25" so bumping up to 2.5 would be good. Did you bring the shop the muffler or did they order it for you?

    Thanks!

Re: Magnaflow is Magnaflow right? They all sound the same on the 2.8 no matter the pa

Stock is slightly smaller than 2.25" pretty sure. Also changing the muffler would have absolutely no effect on the engine, so that guy that told you that is a moron. There are no sensors back there and it sure as hell doesn't effect anything from the engine by changing up the mufflers, cause if that did then putting on a full exhaust would really fuck shit up.
