    hardwire radar detector

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
hey guys, i just picked up a radar detector and i want to hardwire it. I know the easiest way to do this is to hook it up to the 75x under the dash. But i want to have the detector High up by the rear view mirror. Some of my buddys with other cars (not audis) have been able to hook it up via the dome lights or moon roof power in the roof.

so my question is, is there any way to do this in our car? im sure there is but i dont have a volt meter handy so i cant test for power up there. does anyone got pics i can see of an install?

    TIA!!

    Re: hardwire radar detector

I did mine - there is a constant power source in the sunroof control. I had to probe around with a multimeter until I found it. Works perfectly - the only thing is that it is constant power so sometimes I forget to turn my radar detector off...

Of course things could be a little different on a 2001 - mine is a 1998.

Jeez - it would help if I read your post. I don't have any pictures and I didn't read that you don't have a voltmeter...hmmm....

    Re: hardwire radar detector

The point is - if you have a volt meter you can avoid running a wire all the way up to where you want to go. My hard-wire cable is only 8 inches long.

tap 75x and run the wire up the pillar

i tried the sun roof, only "constant" power which sucked.

X2, You can hide the wire behind trim and stuff.

    Re: hardwire radar detector

if you have a mirror with the compass you can tap into the white wire on the plug (mirror side of the plug) and it's not constant, just hot with the key which is perfect :D

no pics but if you just take off the cover you will see the plug and the 6 wires I'm talking about. Not sure if the auto dimming will have it but it's gotta have some sort of power.

The auto dim and compass mirrors use the same wirring.

There is also a switched lead that runs into the sunroof control module...

Go to an auto parts store and pick up a test light for under $10... great thing to have!

For the other posters... whats the 75x?

    Re: hardwire radar detector

test lights good for hot and cold but a voltmeter/multimeter would be better to assure that whatever your hooking up is able to be suppored by the wires you're tapping into.

75X is a power post under the drivers knee bolster, next to the relays, it is switched with the key.
