Time for a rotary? (Pics inside)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Well I can't say I've been taking the best care of my paint recently, but after my body shop's "awesome" detail job with what appeared to have been a hedgehog as a washmitt, I feel it's time to take action.

I have the PC 7424 and Menzerna Intensive Polish, Menzerna Micro Polish and FMJ, but does it look like this just won't cut it? Here are some pics, I used a polarizer and edited it so that the imperfections stand out as much as possible:

The last few times I polished my car with the PC, it seemed to do a good job, but just not PERFECT. Looking for results more along the lines of this, although I know he used a Makita for this job:

My question, do you think it would be possible to achieve similar results with the products I have available?

you need a stronger cut polish, and yes it is possible. it will take you forever though. try Menzerna Power Gloss if you'd like to do it yourself. Get a flex of rotary if you want to do correction at that level

I personally think that the PC doesn't give you the correct reflexes to work with a Rotary.

I can work with 1 hand and eyes closed with the PC, but with a rotary I really need all my attention in order to avoid burning the paint. But, if you can practice on other panels then get the rotary.

Will the 7424 be capable of working with this product? I know it says it's possible in the description on DD, but any actual stories of success from you guys?

The reason it probably says that is because often times youll have a hard time removing the compounding marks with the PC.

Re: Time for a rotary? (Pics inside)

you got the right products you might want to add power gloss.

with the pc you will take a long long time to get the results you want but you can clean it up quite a bit.

if you are up for the makita and you know the risks involved (like making it worst or burning paint ) you can step up or if you have panels to practice on.

    LMK how I can help.

Have you considered getting the Flex???
one important factor is....... yourself. Are you patient with detailing, or you want to get everything good with 1 pass. Your eyes are the most important tool when you detail a car. Lighting is crucial.

These are some examples of what a Flex and patience can do:

flex is another dual action polisher that is pretty safe in general but it has a lot more power than the PC. so it's basically a PC hyped up on polishes steroids

Re: Time for a rotary? (Pics inside)

Flex will never ever replace a rotary though...it dependswhat your looking for. If this is just for your car...dont bother, stick with a PC, grab a couple pads, 2 cutting pads- Lake COunty Orange CCS, 2 polishing pads-White CCS, and maybe 1 finishing pad-Blue CCS

Power Gloss is nice...try Menzerna Super Intensive Polish...it does wonders on Ceramiclears! 1Z has a nice like for German Paints as well...

Its all about trial and error, dont need to get into a rotary if it just for you...unless you really want to learn...but it takes time!

    Goodluck!

Yes, this will be for my car only. I considered taking up other cars for a little side job, but realized that cleaning my car exhausts me, and I don't know if I could handle more than one every few months

So you think the PC with a stronger cut polish could give me some results?

Re: Time for a rotary? (Pics inside)

I'm flattered that you are using my photo.

I did use a makita 9227c for that 350z hood. However, I have done correction with PC only when I first started and it is possible to achieve similar results but it will take more time.

If you make the jump to rotary, you should get a scrap panel from body shop or junkyard to practice on. Learning curve is alot steeper vs. a PC.

Here is an example of using only a PC and Prima Products (designed originally for PC use but does work with rotary as well):

WOW. Concours you have given me faith. I will try correction this weekend with what products I have available (7424, Menzerna Intensive Polish, Menzerna Micro Polish and FMJ) and just be patient and if that doesn't cut it, I will step up to a more cut polish.

Re: Time for a rotary? (Pics inside)

Okay so what I have available right now is:

    Porter Cable 7424

    Menzerna Intensive Polish
    Menzerna Micro Polish
    Menzerna FMJ

    CCS Yellow Pad
    CCS White Pad
    CCS Blue Pad

How should I use these? Which pad should be used with which polish for best results? I imagine the yellow with the Intensive Polish, white with Micro Polish, and white with the FMJ, but I could be wrong... and is the Mothers clay bar over the counter sufficient enough? I noticed the body shop left a significant amount of overspray on my passengers side rear quarter...

Re: Time for a rotary? (Pics inside)

you should probably get a green pad or orange pad.

Orange Pad Menzerna IP start at 3 go to 5 /5.5
White pad Menzerna MP start at 3 got to 5 /5.5

Finish with the blue pad at 3 with the fmj.

I would venture to say that a PC and good polish will take it out. Yes it will take longer, but its better than risking burning the paint if you arent familiar with a rotary.

Learning alot readin this post.. but im missing 1 piece of the puzzle... whats a PC?

Im guessing since you guys compare a PC to a rotary, a PC must be some sort of orbital polisher? but i wanna be sure its that hehe

    Great advice.

Rotary = use at your own risk. This is a fantastic tool that requires many, many, many (did I say 'many') hours before you master it. And even then you may not be that good. It's strength is what makes it risky. Very high powered and quick results (which can go in either direction depending on your experience).

Green pad = agree. Step up to one and follow with white pad (referring to Lake Country pads - CCS pads very good)

PC = Porter Cable, brand of Dual Action orbital. Specifically Porter Cable model 7424.

    Patience = absolutely agree with.

Flex = Never used one but might be a good step up. If you have a Porter Cable, will require more patience, the green pad and other suggestions made.

    Good luck!
