    What's the max wheel width for a C5 A6?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi everyone,

First of all, this is a great forum. I was wondering what the maximum wheel width for a 2000 A6 2.7t is? Can 9.5" wide wheels fit without rolling the fenders? If so, what offset is required and what tires size works? I saw a picture of an A6 with Axis Penta wheels that I guess were 19x9.5 and had a 40mm offset. Do those fit? What about the 25mm or 30mm offset ones?

Does anyone have pics of 9.5" wide wheels on their car??

    Thanks in advance!
    Alex

I have 20x9.5 rears on my Avant, ET40 offset - no fender mods. I haven't tried to fit them on the front wheel wells yet. My fronts are 8.5, and they cleared OK with stock suspension - rubbed a bit with Eibachs.

Re: What's the max wheel width for a C5 A6?

I am looking to upgrade my A6 2.7T wheels. I have it lowered via H&R Sports (~1.5"?) I currently have AT Italia Spyder, 18x8.5 with a 35mm offset, 235x40s

    18x8.5 Compared to OEM:
    • 0.36" further penetration into the wheel well
    • 1.14" further out (wider)
    • 0.4% > wheel diameter

I was wondering if Axis Penta 19x9.5s shod with 235x35 will work all the way around?

    with a 40mm offset:
    • 1.05" further penetration into the wheel well
    • 1.45" further out (wider)

    with a 25mm offset:
    • 0.46" further penetration into the wheel well
    • 2.04" further out (wider)

So, does anyone know if 19x9.5" wheels (and the offsets) work on all four corners? And if there were any issues with rubbing?

I know that 19x8.5 is probably safe... Just seeing if I could push the envelope with 9.5-inch wide tires on the front.

I have also seen staggered setups offered:
    • Fronts: 19x8.5 235x35x19
    • Rears: 19x9.5 275x30x19

The wheel diameters are the same, so the differentials shouldn't care.

    Thanks in advance!

I have 19x9.5 Konig Next wheels wrapped in 245/35/19 tires. Using 8mm H&R wheels spacers in the front and 10mm in the back with no problems, it's also lowered but everything rides smooth

I'll pull my wheels off this weekend and see. I know it's in the 30's because my stock BBS's are 43.

Re: What's the max wheel width for a C5 A6?

wow, that would be a big help. maybe 35-ish? the offset is a real key for my purchase so that i can get a proper fitment. which is what you obviously have!!

i looked all over the web for the offset for Koenig's Privat Netz (I assume that is what you meant).

my calcs were to compare against my OEM 16x7s with a 45...
my 18x8.5 AT Italias run 35mm offset, yielding 0.36" further inward towards suspension, and 1.14" sticking out of wheel well more.

for 9.5" wide rims, offsets yield in/out depth as follows:
    25mm: 0.46 in, 2.04 out
    35mm: 0.86 in, 1.64 out
    40mm: 1.05 in, 1.45 out

So, your number will help me immensely!

    Thanks! Can't wait.

Re: What's the max wheel width for a C5 A6?

here is my lowered A6. 18x8s ET35, 235x40. I went with H&R sport and bilstein shocks.

FWIW: For this wheel, my calculations show a 0.11 inch backspace (further towards hub) compared to OEM.
With 8.5 width, you get the following backspace for the given offsets:
    ET30 --> 0.16
    ET35 --> 0.36
    ET38 --> 0.48

can we try larger photo Jonny? I'm looking at Eibachs (pro? sport?) and H&R (sport?), trying to figure clearances if I go to 235/40/18 (or stay with my225/35/17s). Pro-kit vs. Sport seems to be about 3/4"?

Re: What's the max wheel width for a C5 A6?

did you click on the image? you will see a larger photo :-)

also, memory is dim, but i have H&R Sport Springs and I think Bilstein Sport shocks. (That is, i think both shocks and springs are "Sport". I know I bought Sport... just forget if it was a moniker for both or not).

It lowered the car somewhere around 1.5" to 1.75" I believe. No issues with 18x8ET35 235x40ZR18s. Just issues with clearing dorky speed bumps now and then.

I also have pics of inside the wheel well near the suspension bits, if you need them...

Re: What's the max wheel width for a C5 A6?

Gorgeous 2000 -- great condition. I thought I clicked on pic ... obviously not very well until this time. I'll PM as well to compare some notes, eg, 18x8 vs 18x8.5. Also - lived near Q-town for 5 years, but that's going back a ways.

What do you think about dropping to this level, boys? If I understand "sport" is a bit lower than Pro-kit (for Eibach). Is "sport" same for H&R springs and for Eibach? Trying to decide between Pro-kit and either H&R or Eibach "sport" if anybody can shed light on that. I was also looking to go with Bilstein shocks (no to Koni yellows, for sure).

Thanks for checking EnviedA6!!! I saw your gallery pics. I am curious how far out beyond the fenders the wheels protrude? It doesn't look like too much from the pics, but there were no shallow angle shots to tell how wide the tires were beyond the body.

My 18x8ET35 is 0.1" further in and 0.9" further out than OEM.
Your 19x9.5ET38 must be 1" further in and 1.5" further out than OEM.

I put my hand behind my wheels, hard to imagine I could move the inside wheel edge 0.8" closer to the hub/suspension. But you seem to be rolling proof that there is no rubbing, eh?

Are you running lowered suspension or stock? Your pics seem to reveal stock suspension height... (I am noticeably lowered )

Thanks again for checking and posting!

Actually they are a 35mm offset. The car is lowered with H&R springs. No rubbing besides slight slopes when driving on the highway but not noticable. I'm out a lot further than the stock wheels so an inch and a half is a good estimate.

you can fit 19x10.5 on the back of the c5 2.7t for sure, i have 9.5 and 1 inch spacer with 245 tire and lowered, very little rub when 2 people on the back and very bad road....so i think i can max out 11 wide with the right offset and tire, depends what look you trying to get....and yes 19x12 will work on the c5 4.2 for sure.

Hey Frank do you remember what tire you ran on the 18x9s? 235/40 or 245/40 or 245/35?

Last summer, I was finally able to get my fenders "flared" by Area 1320 (Easton, PA).

Here is a photo of my 2000 A6 2.7T with freshly powder-coated 18x8s (from Complete Custom Wheel) with freshly re-mounted Direzzas (I didn't clean off the tire mounting goop before snapping this photo).

I was able to do Track Day at Pocono Raceway, and have done autocrosses... No rubbing :-)

Jake -- fix your computer. Your clock seems to be off a year or so!

Anything wider than 9.5 expect to spent some coin on them

Search FTW! PS: aren't 235s stretched a little on 9s?

Yeah 235s on a 9" will have some slight stretch.
