Important K04 Questions regarding failure....

I bought two brand new K04's awhile ago, and they are awaiting me to have them installed. My question is realizing that there is a bad batch of turbo failure present with them, is there a way to determine via serial number (or date) of when your turbos were manufactured and/or built? I am scared as hell to go through pulling the engine and everything else only to discover that they are lemons. My boxes show a build date of 22.11.2006. (November 222, 2006). Everyone please check your build dates and let's compile this info here.

I have 05 03 2008 but not installed yet.

Mine came in a big box with other parts inside. The turbos were taken out from the original box so I dont know the build date. But I got them in Octorber of 2007.

I bet there isnt a bad batch, just bad installs. just follow the correct install and prime directions and you'll be fine. Be sure to pour some oil in the oil feed hole and turn the compressor shaft a few times with your fingers before full bolt up.

yeah i think a lot of people DIY on these cars when you really need to know whats going on. I've heard a few "reputable" shops doing installs around my area where the cars have had turbo issues (K04s)... I went to SSP Tuning and I cant even hear my turbos even spool up isnt loud and i run no cats. Maybe im lucky (KNOCKING ON WOOD) but i feel like its a lot of install error as well.

The colored plastic plugs? How could you miss removing those?

I ordered my K04s when ACHTuning had that sale, for $2050 shipped. I think it was around April 08. I had Autospeed install them 3 months later and they pull HARD, and sound great. Been running them for one oil change so far.

People with failed K04's really need to respond to determine what manufacturing date are on the boxes. This way we can figure out if it is indeed installation error or poor quality control.
