    Intake w/ heat shield

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Thanks in great part to the post by Euro A4 I went ahead and fabricated my own heat shield and intake. The process wasn't too bad at all and I was able to make brackets so that I didn't have to drill into anything at all. The intake side seems much cooler but im wondering if I will run into any problems on the engine side with overheating? It seems to be alright but if anyone could offer any opinion on the subject I'd appreciate it. I might just get a CF hood with vents to cool some more. Anyway here are the pics

    ok, I have to ask.

    1. Which CAI is that?

    2. Do you have to leave the plastic funnel looking piece from the OEM intake attached?

I have been looking at CAIs and for some reason they all seem to use the OEM parts. Is that normal for the B7?

    Re: Intake w/ heat shield

What did you use for the actual heatshield? I had seen in a previous post that someone used aluminized heat shield from Pegasus Racing plus some .22 gauge aluminum. I got the heat shield but when I went to purchase that aluminum it seemed really flimsy, almost too thin... Did you use the same? What about you Sir Phrost, what did you use as the heat shield?

Nice job. Glad I could inspire :)

I'll have to check on the exact gauge of the aluminum. It is a tad flimsy so I may re-do mine and use a thicker gauge. The problem is cutting it and bending it as it gets thicker.

    Re: Intake w/ heat shield

-NashA4: Its not a CAI you can buy I made it using the materials that EUROA4 posted on his thread before...search custom intake and I think you should probably find it. You dont have to use the OEM intake piece at all, that's actually my next project this weekend. I'm going to look around and see where else I might draw from and what my options are for different piping. Personally i think the OEM pipe sucks so I will see what I can do it might involve getting a new grill and routing a bigger pipe through there or drawing from the wheel well or the duct at the bottom of the bumper.

-GEkido: When I went to home depot they had very little to choose from. I went with the 19 gauge aluminum which was a little thin for my taste but if you look carefully at my pictures (ill take better ones if you want) I actually made the heat shield out of two pieces, the one big on and then in the front by the actual intake piece I created another piece that wrapped around the intake hose going to the engine. that combined with strategic bending and the brackets I made (one attached to the intake tube, one on the bottom, and one near the windshield) actually create a pretty stiff piece. The problem with going to thick is it will be a pain to try and get it to bend and especially with me to get that second piece under the intake tube so its up to you but it works for me.

-EuroA4 Let me know if you decide to go with the new ducting/piping because I'm gonna try and get that together this weekend and see what works, maybe put my mechanical engineering classes to use for once. Thanks again for your post it was a big help with the part #'s and materials

    Re: Intake w/ heat shield

I just installed my "CAI", I put it down where my old right inter-cooler sat and rigged a little heat shield to protect it from the turbo. Still need to take the bumper off again to realign the Greddy Inter cooler and take some pics.. I was going to have an exhaust shop bend up some custom turbo inlet tubing.. The tech said that he could do it with the same 2.5 inch diameter in steel exhaust piping...probably heat wrapped.. Im might have my heatshield up for grabs pretty soon in the Engine/Performance section..Will post pics soon.

I used 1/16" aluminum and a ton of insulation. Here was my thread with the build:
