steering wheels/car shakes when I accelerate the gas peddle???

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    hi all,

I was hoping to get some direction or answers as to why my car will shake and the steering wheel when I accelerate the gas peddle. When I let go of the gas peddle the shaking stops and car runs completley smooth. I started noticing it with in the last 2 weeks. Can't remember if I hit a pot whole or something that could point to the reason why this is happening. I specifically feel the shaking when on the freeway when I accelerate to 40mph or more.

Anybody had this problem? Or know what it could be??

Any info would e greatly Approciated. Thanks in advance.

Bent rim.. bubble in tire... alignment.. did you recently get new wheels, they could be balanced improperly..

I lean towards improper wheel balancing specially when it does it ~ 40-60MPH, but anything the post above me can cause what you described. Including, but not limited to: warped brake rotors, improper tire inflation, suspension, worn mounts, and road/pavement condition.

Have a tire shop do a dynamic wheel balancing on your tires ($30).

Re: steering wheels/car shakes when I accelerate the gas peddle???

I've had my wheels for over 6 months. And the shaking I started noticing it about 2 weeks ago. So it can't be the wheels. As well I has not noticed any bends on the wheels. I will have to check the air pressure and if that isn't it I'll probably have to get it alligned or do the wheel weight balance. Although wheels already have had the weight balance on them since I put based them 6 months back.

So it definitley has to so with the wheels suspension area. Not anything mechanically like the motor or transmission?

Thanks for all your input guys. I kind of already thought it wasthr allignment. Just wanted to make sure.

if you take it in for a balance and alignment, get under there and check your axles for a tear in a boot. my shaking and vibration came from a bad axle (same symptoms, shaking when accelerating, stopped when i let go of the gas).

if it is an axle go oem on the parts, they tried aftermarket and they suck.

You know that crossed my mind as well.. and I am afraid that could be what it is.. What does one of these boots/cv joint/axle cost?? or what did it cost you? and approximately what was the labor on it? did you get it installed at the dealership?

I will get it checked out tomorrow or Saturday, and update you guys soon.. Thanks for all of your guy's help guys.. Really appreciate it..

Let's just hope it's a wheel balance, anything can throw it off, like curb rash, or pebbles hitting it just right to throw off the spin, weights falling off...if it is an axle that can get much more expensive. I remember a shop charging me $90 a side just to swap out a CV boot. It is a big hunk of metal connected to the differential, I can give a guess that it won't be cheap, at least more than $30 to balance the wheels.

If you have a vib. only when accelerating, you have a bad frt. axle. Not sure on the cost of them.

Re: steering wheels/car shakes when I accelerate the gas peddle???

    So Here's the update guys;

I went around to a few shows yesterday and unfortunately still have not found the problem.. I got the car jacked up, its not the CV Joints/Axles.. The boots are fine, not ripped or any grease coming out.. Axles are completely dry.. As far as I know when a CV Joint/Axles is gone, the boot is ripped and all the grease comes out of the boot and all over the axles etc.. I could be wrong.. Correct me if I am though.. What else am I suppose to look for??

Went to an alignment show, told the mechanic head guy there my situation.. He said right off the bat that it is not the balancing or alignment.. Because if it was, the steering wheels would shake regardless if I was accelerating on the gas peddle or not.. Which makes since.. So the guy mentioned that he has had many customers come to his shop and they also think its an alignment or balancing issue.. And he said that most of the time its the MOTOR MOUNTS?? how true do you guys think this is? my car does have about 67 k /mi. and I never changed them, then again I have only owned the car for about a year.. But my guess is previous owners never changed them either.. How do I check to see if my motor mounts are gone or not? is there any way to tell visually?

Again my car seems to drive fine around the city.. at a speed of 40 mph or more (specially on the freeway) when I accelerate the steering wheel & car will tremble/shake a little.. Once I let go of the gas peddle the car drives completely smooth..

Please advise on this updated info..

    Thanks in advance..

thanks for the reference. I definitley will check them out. I got quoted at audi dealership and they said $475 for one axles either side. And $290 for labor. I'm looking at about $800. So before I decide on looking for an axle. I need to know what to look for to know my axles are gone?? Anybody know? Cause usually on other vehicles I've had the boot will be ripped and all the greese will be leaked out of them and all over the axles. And that is not the case with my axles. So what specifics do I look for?

Thanks again. Guys. And thanks again for the reference itsjeo.

I have the same issue. I am a mech and havnt figured out et. Mine only does it under heavy accel around 20psi of boost but strictly when its cold. I was also thinking axle. That would be good news for me. If I turn my tune down the shaking goes away. When its warm the setting doeant matter and it never shakes. Could this be related to running to lean under to much boost? The fuel system on my tfsi barely keeps up in the summer so with the dense air in winter could be running super lean? Seems to be related to boost pressure but that could mean motor is just making great power when its cold out and putting a higher load on axles? I too need to figure out for sure before I spend any money

mine did the same thing, would shake / vibrate / clunk while speeding up but as soon as you let off the gas it was smooth as hell.
replaced the two front axles from RAxles and it's been perfect since. install was actually pretty easy once i figured it out. about 20 minutes per side. they even send you the proper sockets to do the job.

Sounds like axles to me... My old A4 did the same thing... Raxles are the top of the line.. If you wanna save some cash the ones from Advanced Auto parts are decent.. Ive put them on a few A4s with no issues.. You can get both sides for around $200.. And honestly if you have even basic mechanic skills you can do them yourself in an afternoon..
