    Glove Compartment Handle Broke

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I did a search on the forum and the other threads relate to the damper being broken, but my problem is that my handle broke, so I can't open my glove compartment unless I manually open it with a screwdriver.

I was wondering if anyone knows where I can buy another handle (if at a dealer, how much would it be?) and how can I install it?

Thanks in advance and any help is appreciated.

I think you will need a replacement, which may jack all your keys up since you may need a separate key for the glove box. Anyway, there is a cheaper alternative to buying parts from the dealer a couple of members on this board sells parts cheaper than a dealer can sell you, same parts but 20-40% off what the dealer will sell it to you for. I've personally have worked with 400HPA4 and my experience with him is pleasant. He knows our cars and doesn't say anything he can not deliver.

you should be able to actuate the mechanism for the latch, just look hard, the handle has to be pulling something, just look at how it works so you can get it open, when you order one from the dealer they can order it keyed for your car so you dont have to deal with the lock not being correct.

replacement is easy, open the glove box door.... look on the outside edge of the glove box (looking from the driver's side to the passenger side) and you will see a small screw/bolt. Undo that screw. Then just pull on the handle. The whole locking/handle mechanism will come out

think you just need the 'cover for lock cylinder'

Open passenger door. Remove side panel on dash. Depress the little black latch located closest to the seat and it should open up. I can take pics if you need to know what I'm talking about.

    no, this is from ETKA

its the program the dealers use for part numbers, etc. the bentley is actually a service manual. It has similar diagrams, but does not have part numbers, etc.

the bentley would tell you how to remove and install a glove box, etc. ETKA will call out each of the parts and give you part numbers

I have similar problem as above; glove box stays shut, something inside the opening mechanism is apparently broken.

I opened the side panel but I couldn't find the little black latch. Some pics pointing out where I can find it would be greatly appreciated!!

Angry Re: Glove Compartment Handle Broke

    Guys:

From the earlier posts in this thread, it sounds like you're all aware of this already, but I thought I'd post this anyway...because I'm so pissed at Audi about this. See below....

Audi has a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) on this problem which states the glove compartment cover brake element is FAULTY! It's TSB 68 08 10 2012801/3, and it states it applies to the following vehicles:

    - A3s (2005-2006)
    - A4s (2002-2006)
    - A4 Cabriolets (2003-2006)
    - A8s (2003-2006)

I can't post the Copyrighted TSB. However, I had ALREADY deduced on my own that the faulty glove compartment door damper was causing me to pull open the door every time and was possibly damaging the door hinges.

If your glove compartment door isn't opening anymore or requires you to pull it open by hand, bring it to your Audi dealer before you reach 12 months/12,000 miles on your vehicle. State you are having trouble getting the door to open and have to pull on it excessively, and request warrantee service. After 12/12,000, they will NOT fix it, because it's considered "interior trim"...ridiculous, I know, that Audi thinks it's okay their glove compartments can fall off after 12 months at customer expense.

One has to buy a new glove compartment and/or glove compartment door to repair this because the hinges are integrated with the part. I'm afraid to even ASK what they charge for a new glove compartment door or the entire compartment!

So much for high-quality German engineering...lol. What galls me about this is that it's been a KNOWN faulty issue for a while, and they didn't send out any notices to any Audi owners who might've had the problem and not realized it wasn't a "feature"...and who could've fixed it before the "interior trim" warrantee expired.

If you develop this problem with your glove compartment door and don't get it fixed before 12 months/12,000 miles then you're screwed! I'm not sure if there's a way to lubricate the faulty brake/damper element to prevent the excessive slowness...

By the way, here's a link to the post from a guy who says he found replacement door brakes and fixed this for an earlier model Audi...not sure which cars this would work for, or what the part numbers would be for the new, improved dampers Audi is supposedly using now:

    Hey All,
I'm having this same problem with a RHD B7 Audi A4. Cant get the part from under €170 ($225). I cant seem to PM people (such as 400HPA4 ) but if anyone can supply me this part cheaper I can make an immediate payment. It is the two hinges that have broken on the door.
