    Question Doctor's note for tint??

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I was listening to a morning talk show on the radio the other day and a girl on the show said that one of her friends got a note from an eye doctor that allows him to have a darker tint from what is usually illegal. The idea seems to be possible if you make the argument that the sun hurts your eyes etc, but I ask the question because a new tint job is in my future and if I can go darker than previously expected, that would be awesome. Does anyone here know anything about that, or anyway around having a really dark tint?

    Re: Doctor's note for tint??

i have heard of it being done although i can't speak for how it is in philly. Last time i was actually at the optometrist i was going to look into it but i had forgotten. Ive been looking into it because of wanting to get my front done lightly to lessen road glare at night. Try contacting your DMV and asking them what is required from your doctor in order for you to legally have the tint you desire because of your vision issues

    Re: Doctor's note for tint??

Yeah, I attempted the same thing. When I went to the DMV and requested a "Window Tint Exempt Form", the lady had no idea what I was talking about. She had to go dig up a copy of the form and then make a copy of it for me. But the stipulations are for 1:3 criterions you must meet. In my state, they were some rather severe eye damage and the only way I could have gotten away with it was if I could have gotten a hook up at the doctors office. I actually might try that in the future. People can be cool if they want to be.

But there is another way to get around this. You can apply for a E Class License I think it is. The register your vehicle as a taxi of some sort. There is no special test for the E class (same as D class), you could actually have your license changed to that for maybe $5. I don't know what insurance would be nor what the plate would say. But when you do that, you can have 5 percent window tint if you so choose. But your car must be registered as a taxi or something in that vacinity. Limo, etc.

wow there's more ways around it than I thought, according to the link that was put up, it doesn't even have to be you, the driver, it could be someone who is frequently driven in the car, who is 'irritated' by the sun. This is going to be easier than I thought.

that is exactly what I needed to hear, how did that work when you went to get the doctor's note, did they need a lot of proof or anything or did they just sign something?

    Re: Doctor's note for tint??

OK, I just don't get it.

There is a reason why states have a limit on the amount of tint you can put on your car windows - safety.

C'mon how cool are you going to be when you run over that little old lady crossing the street, and proclaim, "golly gee I didn't see her." Sorry but your doctors exemption won't keep you from going directly to jail, don't pass Go, don't collect $200.

Also, even if you have an exemption, you are ASKING the cops to pull you over. They don't know it is hiding in your glovebox. Perhaps it happens and you were not doing anything wrong...perhaps you had a beer, perhaps six. Ooops, now you are nicked for a DUI.

How about the cop themselves...do you think they feel safe approaching a car which they can not see inside? Believe me, I had two roomates who were police officers, and the standard procedure if you were feeling in the least bit concerned about your safety was to draw your weapon first, ask questions last.

Is it worth it? IMO no 'effing way. Stick with what is legal on the tint, and be happy that you can put that much tint on your ride.

    Re: Doctor's note for tint??

man you sound soo french. calm down its just tint, dont tint your car if you dont want to but dont give us shit and try to make us feel morally wrong. i love my tint, its one of my favorite mods because it keeps the car cool and you can do shit in the car without other people seeing it. and you are saying tinting your car is wong because it might get you caught drunk driving? u make no sense, yea tint is worse than drinking and driving. and lastly i dont give a shit about pigs

now back on topic, i dont really know how the doctors not went because my mother asked the doctor for it once i had already gotten a tint ticket and didnt want to take it off. but the fact is that my mother is sensative to sun( gets spots on her arms) and the car is under her name.

    Re: Doctor's note for tint??

Wow A4Rings, don't take things so personally. But if you insist.

Sorry, though I may currently live in France, I was born and raised in California; and sorry to hear that you may be too. I will be sure to pass on your kind regards to my buddies in the CHP and Sacramento PD; yes they were roommates, we keep in touch, and they work your local beat. Remember, they are just doing their job, and not an easy one at that.

To each his own as to what risks they wish to take with the modifications they make on their cars...it is indeed your choice. Personally, I like the look of tint, and was just voicing how some folks go overboard without knowing the facts.

No, I was NOT comparing DUI with Tint...just ponting out that any additional reason for the police to pull you over may be one to think twice about. C'mon, you have had been pulled over and had to provide proof what three times now?...getting my drift yet? Others may not want that exposure.

Of course in your case your mother has a need for the tint, then great, you get off scott-free. But to advise other to get a note when it is a ruse, give me a break.

Perhaps this line of reasoning is over your head. It is not a moral argument, rather a pragmatic one.

    Re: Doctor's note for tint??

Actually cyclosteve, the tint laws make no sense at all. I'm totally in favor of law enforcement feeling safe when they approach a vehicle, I had the gun drawn situation as they stepped up to my car in San Jose and it was very tense. That said, take a look at mini-vans and big SUV's, they have factory tint on the rear windows which one can't clearly see through, hiding say a 50 cal on a mount. I'm not in favor of 5 or 10% on side windows it's too dark and affects ones ability to see out of the car especially at night. But 35% in no way affects vision either in or out of the car, yet is illegal in many states.

My friend attempted this excuse in California. The officer told him that he is not exempted even with a note. He has to use a temporary window sun block such as a suction cup unit that has a shade to pull down.

    Re: Doctor's note for tint??

Matt, you are 100% on the mark. CA State law (whether we like it or not) states that any tint on the drivers or passenger windows must be removable if the vehicle is to be driven at night. Sorry, no Doctor's note is going to get you out of that ticket.

CA only allows "visible light transmittance" of 88% (12% block), which is essentially clear. Rear window, and back seat windows, go as high as you like, but you must have two side mirrors (all cars do these days). I agree 50% is pretty conservative and not likely to give you too many problems, 35% is probably pushing it, but 5% just asking to be pulled over gumballs-spinning, guns-drawn in California.

If you really want to read the code follow the link.

As I said in my original post, do your homework as to what is legal in your state, and choose if you wish to roll the dice and go for a higher value.

You misread the PA vehicle code posted in the link above. The exemption allows for "Colorless" sunscreening only. Meaning it allows you to apply a UV film not tint

    Re: Doctor's note for tint??

In my state there is an actual window tint exempt that permits those with at least 1:3 of the eye conditions to be exempt. They are serious damages though to the eye and I could not pas it. Though I know an individual whom has, whom recommended me to get the form. I picked it up and read the criterion which I can not pass.

And as listed above you could always register your vehicle as a taxi, limo, etc and apply for the E class license. I was told this by a police officer on a different forum board (Audiforum.com). Cool guy. He permitted people to ask him questions pertaining to the law and then gave answers. He is an Audi enthusiest, so he knows how many just like thier cars to look nice. But he says that laws differ from state to state, so he gave answeres from his knowledge of laws pertaining to his own state.

Link. He has a part one, but am too lazy to search for it.
