Car Idles Low Need Help Got Codes

My brother has a 99 A4 2.8 Quattro. I took out my brothers battery to test it on my car. I put the battery back into his car and now the car idles low. i was told to disconnect the battery for 20 minutes and and reconnet it to reset the ecu. I also ran vag com (courtesy of Ado) and these were the codes that came back:

17967 throttle valve control part

- j338: fault in basic setting

17953 throttle valve control
System malfunction


What should i do now?

Search for Throttle adaptation. Its easy and quick and probably all you need.

The original owner said to use vag and reflash the ecu? i was told by another AZer that you can't flash the ecu like the 00 and 01s... This happened after i took out the battery..

You didn't perform the TBA after removing the battery...

Do that and you SHOULD be fine...

yes... ADO did all that.

Will the TBV code stay cleared? If it does not, the ECU will not complete the adapt.

Check the connections at the TBV.

No help, then you might need to clean the air side of the TB of any carbon deposits.
This can make the adapt & diagnostic fail but car would have run ok before the battery was pulled.

Codes came back up after clearing it. the car ran fine for 2 days after the battery was plugged back in. I was told that the ecu needs to be flash to original settings. is this possible?

RE: cleaning the TBV ... deposits build up a ridge in the air passage and that interferes with the valve movement at idle angles. Its not that hard - toothbrush & acetone or carb cleaner, use some fine emery cloth or brass wool if the crud is stubborn. The pain is in getting it out tho.

The delayed reaction may be cause some codes that are borderline will not post up till 'hard' , once there the ECU may ignore certain inputs or will internally break control loops depending on the codes set.

The only thing you can do to set back to "original settings" is reset all the adaptation channels...

IN VAGCOM

Go to ECU
Adaptations
Ch 00 > GO
00 Should be already set into memory.
Click save.
Done!

This will reset everything back to original config....

Where is the TBV located at??

Went to scan the car today. Car idles at ~500-600. same codes. when i turn the key to ignition on i dont hear the tb adapting itself (like on my 1.8) im only assuming 2.8's do this aswell. also when i cleard the codes when car was running the rpms jumped. my guess is bad throttle body.

Thanks for dropping by and doing that. I have researched to see where the throttle body is to I can take it out and clean it. I found one link but it wasn't clear where the clips are at for the breather hose. Do you know where the breather hose is at?

Hey DM, been away for like a day.

So was this car idling perfectly before the battery swap or were there a few issues?

Have you got the book for this? Even a Haynes or Chilton import volume will help. Get at the reference section at the library and make copies.

took apart the TB hose to clean and still having the same issue. just picked up a used TB from 034 motorsport so hope this is it! i will let you guys know!!

i didnt really look at the new throttle body given to when my bro took off the old one because i was too busy trying to figure out how to install my diverter valve, he was excited and installed it. after installing it, it would turn and shut off. after that, his gas pedal was stuck. then i went in and took the throttle body apart just to find out that the throttle bodies were different. gotta go back tomorrow...

I got the correct throttle body installed and now the car turns and dies. If I keep my feet on the gas, car stays running. Once I let go, it dies. What do I do now?
