are you asking 1) "if tiptronic is faster than manual?", or are you asking if 2) "D is faster than tip mode?"

    Answers:
    1) Manual is faster and much more responsive than tiptronic

    2) Sport mode is the fastest way to shift in an automatic A4

    1) depends on what you are doing. Off the line I can beat almost any (on a consistant basis any) manual of the same car and same specs. On a roadcoarse the manual is better due to tiptronic sluggish downshifts.
    2) Yup sport mode is definately faster.

hmm so would tip be faster for drag race?
also it makes me wonder dsg would be batter for a roadcorse right?
is the any way to make our tips as quick as dsg?

Manual>Automatic. If you can drive a manual like a bastard a tip car of the same spec will lose.

I have driven both Auto and Stick A4. The Stick is completely different, in a good way. It feels like Audi designed this car to be a stick. If you're going to go auto, you might as well save your money and get a Honda!

gotta agree with him here, i had a tip before (B6 1.8t) and have driven the b7 tip 2.0t, and i love having a manual. i feel so much more connected to the car, and it will definitely be faster than a tip of the same spec. even audi quotes it in their 0-60 speeds as well.

I thought tiptronic transmissions had more drivetrain loss. Does tiptronic have different gear ratios than manual?

Yep, but only if the car with manual has five occupants and 500 lbs worth of sand bags in the trunk.

You can launch an auto better than a manual and the truth is that if you decide to go big turbo, an auto will be faster because you will be able to launch with a lot more boost and not lose that boost between shifts.

I love my 6mt tho and it is certainty faster in regular day to day activities. Most of the cars i've ever owned have been manual so i can feel the differene

The Tiptronic in Audi's shifts to slow to warrant paddle shifters. Yes I have driven one, we had an A6 4.2. As most tip guys agree, letting the Auto shift itself in sport mode is the fastest your going to go in tiptronic.

I'll also add, a 6 Speed Manual with Quattro is the best driving dynamic you will find in an Audi. I am not saying the others are bad, but don't fool yourself. Tiptronic, CVT, DSG, and Frontrak are just not as engaging.

not to mention the added money of having to build the auto if you want to do aggressive performance mods to it...

check out the drag times on my sig, numbers dont lie, and that was with a boost leak. I have been well into the 1.8's for 60 foot but ran a 14.2

See ^ like i was saying. there is no substitute for launching an automatic vs a manual the only way to get the same boost in a manual is to have a 2 step rev limiter

As of right now the fastest Stock Turbo A4 ran a 13.7@99mph without a High Performance FSI Pump or Upgraded Intercooler and it was a manual. Im hoping to break that record with my Tip this September. but as of right now the fastest known stock turbo A4 is a manual.

Not always, depends on the driver. Its easier to launch a tip at 3500 rpm's than it is a manual. Some people like kristokes are able to launch better than me. But there are not many out there. As far as the 1/4 goes transmission does not matter once you are out of first. Road racing is another story, thats where I HATE not having a manual. But on Monday morning when I drive an hour to work I love my Tip again! I dont understand why people think the tip is at such a disadvantage when it comes to acceleration.

Let us know when you blow your transmission with that awesome launch boost power!!!!

ugh, I truly think if you want any serious power you should build up the tip before you do some damage...

Tiptronic slushboxes will eventually go away and be replaced by DSG which is an automatically-shifted manual transmission. I can envision the future where DGS will be controlled by the same shift pattern we have with a manual 6spd. I love rowing the gears and jumping from 2nd to 5th after a hard launch to cruising speed and have done this on all my manual transmission cars (except the ones that don't have a 5th gear).

IMHO, the DGS transmissions are being "tested" in the VW lineup and on the A3 and will eventually find there way to the more powerful models after the engineers evaluate the DGS durability in real world conditions. DSG will outshift any manual transmission and should be able to surpass any slushbox (i.e. Tiptronic) for handling high torque loads like a manual trans because DSG really is, in its guts, a manual trans. DSG will replace manual transmissions eventually if they can be made to enable complete control that manual transmission currently provides (i.e. 1st-to-3rd or 5th-to-2nd shifts).

ugh, I truly think if you want any serious power you should build up the tip before you do some damage...
I'll give you a ring when it blows up.
