not passing evap on readiness.... idea?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
so my goal of making my car daily driveable on the stock ecu and passing inspection is finally close.. The car runs great, but I'm failing three readiness.

    1) Oxygen Sensor(s)
    2) Evap
    3) Catylitic Converter

So, I'm not running a cat, and I don't have my post-cat o2 in the exhaust, it's just plugged in. My evap system I'm not so sure.. It has always failed since the car was stock. I took the hard line that goes from one side of the bay to the other completely off and plugged both open hoses and the port in the intake mani, still nothing..

Basically, I need the fastest, cheapest way to pass one or more of these remaining readiness blocks. Cars from 1999 and down can fail two readiness and still get an inspection sticker in NY.. None of these things effect my perfromance, so I don't care which is fixed.

Would putting a resistor on the harness that plugs into the weird evap motor/solenoid/sensor be a fix? Or do you think just running the post cat o2 with a defouler would solve my issue.

Any input is appreciated.. I have 10 days to get the new inspection.

what codes are you pulling? if its a cat inefficiency code, try plugging it back in with two defoulers. sometimes if you get a cat code you fail both o2 and evap readiness.

is n80 valve plugged in? if not then plug in either the valve or a resistor.

tapp doesnt fix this stuff for you?

You get your tapp tuning all worked out Alex? I got the 034 ecu running pretty good had to play with the adaption settings and add a lot more fuel up top. Not sure if you saw my thread but I actually passed the smog test with no cat.

Re: not passing evap on readiness.... idea?

I haven't seen your thread dude, but I'll check now.. Glad you got it all going! More fuel!!! my was extremely rich on that tune lol.. We don't have smog testing here, just an OBD II plug in and they check all readiness.

Tapp is good as far as driveability and power go, I'm much happier than I was with the SEM.
I spoke to Chris Tapp today and asked if he could make me Pass all Readiness all the time, regardless of what was mechanically/electronically really there.. (Unitronic can do this, but only on the newer ME7 ecu's..) According to Chris, the me5.9 ecu isn't capable of such things? Also, he has never really even looked into doing something like this.

Oh well, I'm doing my best to make it work.

The n80 valve is the one with a 2 prong harness that clicks all the time and has one tube attatched to it that y's off a bunch of times and turns to a hard line? If yes, that's plugged in and the nipple is plugged. I had it open to air at first and that made no difference. Should I try the resistor? I just didn't want to take a chance of frying something.

Thanks guys, keep the help coming, because in the end, it will be you guys who enable me to drive the car every day :)

just use a spacer and reinstall the rear o2 in your exhaust.

going to do that today, although i think I need a new rear o2 sensor. grrr

Re: not passing evap on readiness.... idea?

wow. i hate you alot right now. did you do that with your own tuning or you're legitimately passing all those things?

what kind of resistor would I use for the n80 harness? I plugged the o2 in the downpipe and used a defouler and now, i'm failing o2 heating, o2 sensors, evaporative emission, catalyst heating.. fuckkkkk! (on the verge of taking out a loan and picking up a mkIV r32 lol)

02 heating i think means a bad sensor.

Re: not passing evap on readiness.... idea?

ok, after one cycle the o2 heating is back to "pass".. still have the other three though. Once I find out what type of resister to put on the n80 harness I'll do that and hope for the best. How can I find out what type I need? (i suck with electrical)

Re: not passing evap on readiness.... idea?

just plug the valve in. if it still fails then theres really a problem with the evap system. try driving the car some more to see what still passes and falls. or force readiness with vagcom.

and we did the hex edit mod. ;)

force readiness? no idea how to do that.
The valve is plugged in, it's just capped off.
give me a call and tell me some info on this force readiness shizz. (516)779-3837

Re: not passing evap on readiness.... idea?

    I DID IT!
rigged up the evap system nice nad ghetto, forced the ecu to run the test on the evap system in both block 70 and 71 (never knew i could do this...) so much better than driving around waiting.

After a little screwing around and getting the n80 valve to open, i ran the test once more and it passed. It was 4:53 at this time, luckily i'm close to the inspection shop. i flew over there, got it inspected at 4:59 and passed. Next up, sway bars, rear dif mounts, spa manifold, downpipe with ported gate and low 11's :)
    thanks guys
