    Alternator or something else?

I posted a few weeks ago about battery recommendations. Well I got a battery on that Friday, by Monday I was having the same problems. I got the battery replaced, and alternator tested and was told I need a new alternator (by the guys at Advanced). I take the car to the dealership and the tech there says he doubts it's the alternator b/c he's only seen like two cars that needed to have them replaced in all the time he'd been there. So I make an appointment for a diagnostic. After more than 2 hours the tech comes in and says it's NOT my alternator and that it's probably a parasitic drain and he needs to do more testing which will also cost me more money. I leave and he calls me saying ok it IS the alternator and they want $955 to replace it, which I wasn't willing or able to do. I go pick her up and read the diagnostic report which basically says maybe it's the alternator maybe it's not they'll have to bench test it to know for sure. That was on last Friday. The car has worked fine since then. Today it wouldn't start however, I get a jump and drive to work and at the end of my 10 minute trip to work, my gauges start going crazy. Going up and down for no reason at all. So I'm planning on installing an alternator myself with a friend this weekend. Just wanted to know what you guys think. The tech seems to think it's a drain of some sort, but my car is fully stock. Any advice or insight is much appreciated. Thanks! Sorry if the post is kinda long.

    Re: Alternator or something else?

I had my headlights off, and I didn't notice if the battery light came on. But now that I'm thinking about it my battery light came on a couple of times last night while I was driving. I wanna say it happened when I hit a couple of bumps in the road. This is really frustrating. I'm strapped for cash so I can't afford to keep taking it places to get checked. The last thing I want to do is put an alternator in and have the same problems. How can I check for a bad ground?
