    *WF* - Info/Pics on AWE & Autospeed S/C's..

    Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    After talking to some of the reps from both companies at the 2008 Waterfest show, this is the "info" I gathered on their attempt to release a supercharger for the B6/B7 S4....

    =============== AWE -(VF/GIAC)

    Forgot to take pictures of the whole car, but I'm sure we've all seen them from their official post of the drive down to N.J., for those that don't know, their test mule is a B7 S4 Avant (black).

    They claimed that the supercharger for the B7 S4 is almost completed and is expected to be released in January 2009. Developement for the B6 S4 will come after that.

    For the RS4... unfortunately no plans for development anytime soon. Don't know if this guy I talked to knew what he was talking about, but he claimed developement for the RS4 SC would come only after they develop something for the B6 S4, S5, Q7... and ultimately the RS4 in that order

    Power Stats: 372 AWHP - 326 TQ

    Here are some pictures of the engine bay and charts they had on display at their booth:

    =============== AutoSpeed

    Test mule is a B6 S4 sedan (silver)

    I found this supercharger very interesting. Unlike most superchargers we've seen for our cars, this one is mounted on the bottom right side of the motor. According to the reps at the AutoSpeed booth, the position of their S/C reduces many of the heat issues related with intake manifold mounted S/C we're used to seeing.

    I did not get any sort of time frame on the release of this supercharger other than it will be "very soon". They are still in the process of developing the S/C for the B7 S4 and claim to develop one for the RS4 shortly after.

    Power Stats: "400 AWHP - ??? TQ" No dyno charts to backup the estimated numbers. However they did mention that the S/C will reach 10.5 PSI boost at peak RPM safely, due to the intercooler and the type of S/C they use.

    Pictures:

    Unfortunately that is all the info I could get from these guys... enjoy!

    I've only splurged on rims and tires. Having not even jumped on DP/Cat-back train i'm waiting for the SC kits to drop. Suppose I'll just have to hold my breath (crosses fingers and hopes for availability/pricing or AWE non-res back in stock)

    Just curious here. B7 first and then B6? It's the exact same motor. Can anyone tell me why the kits for these two cars wouldn't be indentical and released at the same time?

    I like that the Autospeed is lower mounted, but it also looks like it would increase front bias the most. Regardless of the cost of these SC's, many more mods will be necessary to really take advantage of them.

    well the two kits are made by two different companies which would explain the different styles. Autospeed may have bought their car 3 years ago as a company show car, then decided to supercharge it when they found the demand for a product is there.

    As far as i know, i haven't heard of either of these supercharger kits until waterfest

    Agree, only thing I can imagine now is that there are some minor differences in ECU, hardware is the same.

    My guess is that the subtle difference in body style/dimensions between the B6 and B7 is the reason for this. The B6 will likely have to be packaged in a slightly different manner. Just a guess, though.

    Can anyone figure out whey the ASP kit is more expensive than the AWE kit? It looks like it uses a less expensive centrifugal supercharger as opposed to a more expensive twin screw unit. It appears to use a less expensive and efficient (not that it needs more) air to air intercooler while the AWE kit uses a liquid to air cooler with auxillary water radiator. This perplexes me unless it's possible people were leaked bad price information. Will be interesting to see.

    cheers! Mike

    Thanks for the pics KryptoniK. I really like the AWE kit and hope to go this route providing the test car stays together. Autospeed took a unique approach, but not my cup of tea.

    Isnt AWE's a Roots? Or is it a twin screw?

    True the s/w could be the reason. The subtle body differences that tadhgbrosnan points out did cross my mind too, but I really couldn't see where that would change things for the kit. Then again I didn't install it so who knows. Again, it sure would be nice if VF or AWE would chime in here.

    oops, i was just using the twin screw label liberally as to call it a positive displacement charger but you're right i didnt look if it was roots or twin screw. Eaton makes roots style blowers I believe. Thanks for the correction.

    Autospeeds pricing is usually on the higher side, but their parts are quality. They can charge $30k if they want but I guess they felt $12k was fair. the Autospeed setup impressed me more though FWIW

    AWE isn't using twin-screw, it's a Magnuson/Eaton roots which is less expensive than twin-screw for multiple reasons.

    As for the prices, I've heard $8K to "at least $10K" for the VF/AWE kit, but with it being 5-6 months out I doubt that VF/AWE has set an exact price. Just wait for official information from the tuners... besides, the Autospeed unit may never be for sale.

    Nothing against ASP, but they seem to be where APR was two years ago, i.e. kit installed at a show, but with no dyno plots or "proof" that it runs correctly. Not necessarily a fair comparison, but I'm just being realistic about it.

    Only thing that is poping is Rotrex SC itself. This is "Made in Denmark" product, arguably from most expensive Eu country. This is one that is installed on Koenigsssssegggg twin charged model (SXX or SSX or something simmilar). It can be easily twice of the price of M90 Eaton

    The Rotrex supercharger kit from Active Autowerke for the BMW 325i includes the Rotrex charger, an intercooler, fueling, and programming for $4100 (MSRP: $4400). Of course their positive displacement supercharger kit is 10 grand but quite a bit more work goes into those. Just thinking out loud.

    It's no lower than the oil pan or aux. radiators and nobody seems concerned about them getting 'eaten up'.
