Anyone know whether or not our keys are waterproof?
I erred on the side of caution and didnt go in the water with my keys yesterday. I did feel kinda nervous leaving them on the shore tho.

    Re: Key Waterproof?

NO, i just found out yesterday! I enjoyed a nice swim after waterfest, felt something on my foot..IT WAS MY KEYS!!! I thought they were closed tight enough to prevent water from going inside, but sure enough, it didnt work when I went over to my car. I opened it up and blow dried the inside to get all the water out...good news, 24 hours later and my key works again

It's just like a cell phone IMO... Not waterproof, won't work if you get it wet, but can be dried out if you're lucky
    Ignorance is bliss.

    Re: Key Waterproof?

if an electronic device ever gets wet... STOP USING IT... PULL THE BATTERY/UNPLUG THE DEVICE (BUT BE CAREFUL DOING SO NOT TO ELECTROCUTE YOURSELF)... LET IT DRY... If the water hasn't already shorted something out or damaged any components, you should be fine. Blow dryer isn't all that great of an idea because the heat from a blow dryer is hot enough to damage or loosen components on any electronic device.

I know because I am an electrical engineer at (cough cough) and we use blow dryers just as hot and hotter as the ones you use to dry your hair.

And no, our keymotes are not shut air tight as you would need some type of adhesive and would make it much more difficult to replace the battery of the keymote

    Re: Key Waterproof?

Oh come on, the batteries in those keys are just tiny button cells, and a little RF device like that draws barely any current. High-potential, low-current devices (LCD backlights, TVs), or high-current, low-potential devices (car starters) are the things that'll zap ya. Worrying about being hurt by a wet remote is like saying that getting in the pool with an ipod draws risk of injury or death. Admittedly, your ipod will be screwed.

Anyhow, this is why Audi gave us the plastic black "emergency" keys. When you go to the beach, hide your fancy electronic remote in the car, throw that hunk of plastic in your pocket, and forget it.

you're right... but if you read my post... it wasn't aimed at just our keymotes... those are precautions for ALL electronic devices in general... even then... you want to remove the battery as the battery can corrode from the water or short something else on the circuit board that wasn't supposed to connect directly to the battery... FYI electricity CAN flow through liquids due to impurities... so kiss my
