    Timing Chain Repair

    Hi everyone,

I need to change my tensioner for the camshaft i think. I get the horrible knocking sound from the back of the engine, ands its been leaking very little oil from the seal back there forever. I was going to drop it off with my mechanic on the weekend. but I needed to know what parts i would need for the whole job can someone please let me know(as in tensioner itself, which seals, how many seals, gaskets, new hardware
). Mechanic has no car and will delay the repair untill monday, i would rather have all the parts before he takes the car apart and return parts if needed.
Hes doing that and i think rear main seal.Car has been leaking from underneath the car, which needs to be done right away, can't keep topping up the oil. Can someone tell me what ill be needing and what else should be done during this repair because hes taking it all apart right now might as well do some preventative maintenance.
Also changing the lifters, wanted to know if thats worth it, the engine ticks like a diesel after 2000km after an oil change. would like to get rid of that.

Please if anyone has done this repiar just a parts list would be awesome, thanks in advance.
The car is a 98 a4 auto AEB engine.

    Re: Timing Chain Repair

you need cam chain tensioner, cam chain tensioner gasket set, valve cover gasket set, cam chain (if you want to replace it). Shouldn't need any hardware.

Cam chain tensioner is pricey so I wouldn't worry about replacing it unless you need to. Also they make a special tool for compressing the tensioner without damaging it. A new tensioner comes with this tool.
