    Transmission pan leak

Long story short i had to replace my trans pan cause i scraped and put a hole in it. so after replacing the pan, filter, and gasket it was still leaking, but from the gasket(used permatex on the gasket) go to dealership to buy a new gasket and ask the tech if the gaskets need to be permatexed, he said no. so i put the new one on sans permatex and its leaking worse than it was. so here i am losing $15/quart fluid with no real solutions. i was thinking maybe an extra lock washer to pull the pan tighter (maybe the old torx aren't pulling it tight enough (especially after the wrestling match i had with them)

but thinking about it logically, it seems that something is causing alot of extra pressure inside the transmission pan and forcing the fluid through the gasket.

    any ideas/suggestions?

    Re: Transmission pan leak

i've done mine and never had to use permatex, used a rag and brake cleaner to make sure all surfaces are clean (spotless clean). have you used a torque wrench to torque the bolts? If you have over torqued the bolts than can cause leaks just as much as leaving them loose. torque spec is around 10 ft/lbs as i recall (barely snug).

    Re: Transmission pan leak

Did you make sure and get both surfaces (pan and trans) cleaned up real well? Maybe take a scotchbrite pad and see if you have some of the old gasket let on there. Is it possible that what you scraped on could have deformed the pan slightly? Try to check it with a straight edge. Did you torque all the bolts down a little at a time? Maybe they just needs to be retorqued properly, as the rubber compresses.

I actually had the same thing happen to me. I hit a dip at a pretty good speed and scraped HARD, thought the frame bent on that one. Anyway, it drove fine that night so I figured it was okay, but the next morning I had trouble shifting. Without realizing it all the fluid gradually drained out over the next day and I had to get it towed to my mechanic. $600 later (new pan, gasket, fluid, filter and labor) he showed me the 3 pinhole sized leaks in the old pan. If I knew they were that small I could have had someone fix it up real cheap...
No time to mod with so many things to fix...

    Re: Transmission pan leak

yeah, i took the pan off, cleaned it back down to the metal ensuring all of the old gasket was removed. after that i cleaned everything with brake cleaner and let it dry. the only thing i can say is that i may have over torqued them. i"ll jack it up tomorrow and back them off a little. cause this time it started leaking while was injecting the trans fluid.

yeah same thing happened to me, i thought i dinged my oil pan (again) 2 days later my shifting was real clunky, so i looked at my parking spot and realzied it was trans fluid...AHHHHHH
