    Oil Change DIY? A4 B5

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a 98 a4/2.8/Quattro. I've never changed the oil on this car myself but have on previous cars. Is the drain plug on the rear or front of the case? I plan on lifting the front end, on ramps or stands vs using a lift to raise the entire car, and was wondering if the oil will drain properly by lifting only the front end.

If lifting the front end only vs the entire car is adequate, then do you recommend ramps or jack stands to get plenty of clearance to work underneath.

If there are any other recommendations or sugestions regarding the process that I might not expect please feel free to comment.

Ramps are enough for me. I can't say where the 2.8 drain plug is but I can't imagine it'd be very hard to find... just look at the oil pan.

You don't even need to lift the car. My car is lowered and I don't lift it at all when changing the oil. The plug is on the drivers side right near the front. The filter is right around their as well. Very easy car to do an oil change on. Also the engine does take slightly more oil than the book says, So just fill it up till the dipstick says it's good.

Probly not compared to yours, Bilsteins with Eibach springs. Low as I wanted to go with the MN winters.

Pretty much what 777 says. Mine is not lowered....yet....anyway, I have no trouble getting to the plug & filter. Lotsa room unda there.

Do get the right sized mm socket and make sure your filter gasket comes off with the filter.

What about the filter? Any issues with using something common like Fram or STP? It's my understanding that Audi Filters have some sort of valve to keep oil in the filter when the engine is shut off...per the parts/service guy at the local dealership.

2.8 oil change is SOO easy to do. Filter is right on the bottom. Just drive up on ramps, take off the plastic cover, drain it, change the filter, pour in new oil. The car takes like 5+ quarts.

OP, heres 2 links I got from this thread.....Oil Filter Revealed & Oil Filters Revealed.

I learned a bit from that thread & links, like the reason we need the anti-drain valve is the filter orientation > Horiz vs Vert.

YikEs!. Could have happened to me too. lOl. Now I always line up the old filter gasket with the new, to check for size and it also oils the new one. 1st time I did this car, there was no gasket to match and it was stuck above.

My 98 has a plastic belly pan that needs to be removed before you can get at the oil pan. 3 screws in front, 3 in back and 1 or 2 at each fender well. I suggest using a 6 point socket to get the drain plug off. A 12 point socket or wrench may slip and strip the nut. (ask me how I know, it just happened last week to me) Luckily new drain plugs are available at the dealer.
