    2.8 clutch setup ?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
my clutch is slipping like a mofo, so i am planning on putting a southbend clutch in there, the only question is if i should keep the oem dual mass fw or get a single pate one. if i switch to a single which FW would be appropriate for a stage 3 or 4 clutch.

    thanks in advance.

    Re: 2.8 clutch setup ?

i stuck with the stock clutch and went with a southbend stage 3+. is there any reason that you would need a stage 4 clutch? do you do a lot of city driving?

Why not a stock clutch. I have 130k on mine and it doesn't slip and I've launched a few times and am chipped. Thats NYC driving 2, bumper 2 bumper stop and go.

    Re: 2.8 clutch setup ?

Have the SB Stage 3 here with the Unorthodox LWFW.

Nice combo, and MORE than enough to hold the HP with the PES G2. It does chatter some, and a bit of sound comes through the shifter due to having the full JHM SS Kit, but it shifts like never before...smooth, solid and exact...no slop. I simply can not believe the difference this combo has made with the car.

OEM is fine for a normally aspirated 2.8, but insufficient if you want to to go the PES route down the line.

The pedal height is a little better, but still exactly the opposite of my BMW, which always takes 10 minutes to reprogram my left foot when I change cars.

If you're staying N/A, the stage 1-2 would be plenty for some spirited driving.

LWFW is definitely a good idea.

    Re: 2.8 clutch setup ?

how much of a difference will the lwfw really make? I'm getting a stg III soon (might get a II though, not too sure on my intent with this car, the price difference isn't much though and I don't mind a stiff clutch) I'm used to driving an on/off style clutch in my friend's R32 skyline GTR, mmm triple plate. hahaha

    Re: 2.8 clutch setup ?

I can't compare apples to apples on the LWFW. I had my '96 12V FronTrak and I now have the 98.5TQM. I installed my LWFW and Stg2+ clutch on the one I have now. I can't say it made the world of a difference, but it helped throttle response and shifting. The 12V I had (driving normal) would rev down really slowly. Slow enough that I had to learn to let the clutch out later than what I was used to('91 Camaro).

I wouldn't go back to a stock FW. I don't like the Dual Mass idea. It works for comfort, but not real well for performance. I've seen more Dual Mass F/W's break than nonDMFW's

yeah I figured the difference would only be that if any. Just debating cost vs. effect. LWFW's are pretty friggin expensive.

    Re: 2.8 clutch setup ?

I paid $400 for mine. One person in town would resurface DMFW's and he offered no warranty since he doesn't like doing them.
The SPEC 16 lb FW is close to the same price as a DMFW, and I needed a FW. I almost bought an Unorthodox racing aluminum FW, but the guy didn't want to sell it w/o the 6 puck. I didn't want a 6 puck, so I bought SPEC.

I would be gettin the UR one I think if I do. Well i don't really know, I think I am going to go as cheap as possible, $60 for a resurface on my FW, stage one SB clutch. Save up and continue building my VR6-T. I don't want to pour money down the 2.8 hole anymore.

    Re: 2.8 clutch setup ?

all of the clutches are between 350 and 450 whether stock or stage 3. I really beat on my car and enjoy driving it even if i only have a ferocious 190 little horse.. hah i would like the luxury of not having to worry about a 6000 rpm drop every now and then im not going to replace it with a stock clutch and fuck it up 20,000 miles later.

    Re: 2.8 clutch setup ?

that's the only reason why I would get a stgIII for mine, because I like to do that too, quite often, and I am hard on my vehicle. I think a stgII will do me fine though for the time being.

    Re: 2.8 clutch setup ?

I would certainly ditch the DM flywheel.

I had a SM one custom made for my car - in steel, and 7,2 kilos.
I wouldn't go too light though on an I4 motor though, it'll chatter like mad otherwise.

I'd personally go with a SM flywheel, regardless of clutch choice.
