    Automatic Folding Mirrors

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I remembering reading a thread out there about someone going to try to wire their folding mirrors to activate with the alarm. So when the alarm is put on and the door lock the mirrors tuck away. And when you unlock and un-arm your car the mirrors fold out again. Has anyone done this yet and if so some directions on how to do it would greatly help.

    Thank you

I thought that would work but for some reason the mirrors will fold when i turn the knob as expected, but when i turn the car back on and drive off the mirrors stay folded until i turn the knob back....its weird b/c you would think they would turn back automatically when i drive off

    Re: Automatic Folding Mirrors

They stay folded if you drive away with them folded in. At least that's what they did when I tried it once.

The alarm idea is a cool one! I'd be interested in seeing how that could be done as well.

I had started a thread about this a while back. The folding of the mirrors cannot be vag'd, it's hardwired to work only with a certain package equipped on your car (depending on the year its either conveniece or...something else, name escapes me). I had gone nuts trying to figure out why my mirrors would fold in. Everyone had different ideas but it came down to Equipment packages on the car itself.

I wonder if they make less air resistance while folded in... Perhaps I'll leave them folded in the next time I'm at the drag strip?

    Re: Automatic Folding Mirrors

The power folding is an option, true. They will never automatically fold in our out though... it is manually controlled by the mirror adjustment knob.

I would like a mod to have them automatically fold though.

Now I'm probably over simplifying this..probably due to the fact that I have no idea what I'm talking about but...couldn't you tap the folded position of the mirror switch to the alarms power lock wires and tap the normal position of the switch to the power unlock?

This may work because if you turn the knob to fold mirrors while driving, they won't fold because it's doing a speed detection I'm guessing. So locking the doors while driving should be fine. it's when you come to a stop that may pose a problem. :)

It's times like this when I wish I had the Bentley manual. All we need are some wiring diagrams of the mirror switch, alarm. convenience module and lock switch and I'm sure someone intelligent can figure this out.

    Re: Automatic Folding Mirrors

I wish there was a way to up the speed that they could be folded in at. I always fold them in before i pull up to the mailbox, but I have to almost come to a complete stop before i can fold them in. It would also be nice if they unfolded automatically above a certain speed. Our BMW does that.

Maybe you could tap into the wires that lock the doors when you reach 15mph?

Since the locks in our cars are electronic and the "signal" is only sent at certain times, once the car locks the doors during drive-away it wont send the signal again. (Or you can just use VAGCOM to turn the auto-locking feature off).

This means that your idea should work assuming that the vehicle speed mirror folding override feature will supersede any other locking signal that might get sent to the mirrors. Basically, even though the car locks the doors once you start to drive away, the mirrors wont fold because the computer knows you are moving. It would be cool to try.

If someone has the wiring diagram for the power folding mirror control switch then I might try this. A simple test shouldn't be too hard running a couple wires. You'd have to completely bypass the switch though, this is due to the power folding control being position based on the switch (not just an electronic button).

I swear i fear those things are going to break everytime i turn them in, or out. And thats not many times, unless im parking in tight spaces or shopping center parking lots.

I couldn't imagine the repair bill, and how often to repair, having those open and close 3-4 times a day for me. yikes!!

    Re: Automatic Folding Mirrors

So I've been doing some reading on using relays and I stumbled across two products that may make this work.

DEI 528T Pulse Timer $8-$13 each
    # Pulse timer with SPDT (Single Pole Double Throw) Relay
    # Adjustable Timer Control From 1 to 90 seconds

    or

    DEI 611T Programmable Switch = $13-$16 each
    # Programmable solid state switch
    # Program to: Normally Open, Normally Closed, Timed Toggled or Timed Latched
    # 1 - 100 Seconds variable program
    # Negative or positive pulse activation

I need the wiring diagram for the power folding mirrors though. So if anyone has it I'd appreciate it!

On a side note..I'll also be using the DEI 611T to convert my "FUNK" switch from a momentary pulse to a bi-stable (On/Off) switch. I needed to do this so I could turn on the 640 Servotronic relay back on when parking.
