    Question Strangest Sound Ever

I dont know if anybody will be able to help with this but I'll describe it as best as I can. I was driving yesterday in stop and go traffic and my car started making this horrible metal grinding sound accompanied by a really high pitched whine, almost like feedback from the stereo. The car did not drive any differently and I pulled over to take a look, didn't see anything, and the sound went away when I started driving again. This is the second time this has happened and both times have been in bad traffic in near 100 degree heat. Any ideas?

Where was the sound coming from? Were there any smells/smoke accompanying the sound? Besides running the a/c in hot weather, was there any other similarities going on during both moments when the car made the sound? In other words....need more info

It seemed like the sound was coming from the front but it almost seemed like it was all around. I cant think of any similarities besides traffic, heat, and AC.

My car has 12,000 miles on it, think it could be that so soon?

    Re: Strangest Sound Ever

Still too vague. You would have a hard time at the dealership or any mechanic because you would need to reproduce the problem/noise or have a fault code to be read from the ECU. If you've only heard it twice in 12,000 miles and everything is working properly I wouldn't worry about it unless it becomes regular or really loud...like a worrisome loud. Sorry that wasn't much help but I'm sure you understand what I'm trying to say.

I had the exact same problem at 5k miles. A loud grinding sound comes and goes especially at hot weather and after hours of driving. After awhile a big boom sound came from the hood, the ac stopped working but the car drove normally. It turned out to be the ac compressor I don't know what was exactly wrong with it but it stoped working. The dealer replaced it and the sound never came back.

Awesome, this helps so much. I haevn't gotten the "boom" yet but when I do, I'll know what it is ha. And you're right, it has only happened after at least an hour and a half of driving with the AC on.

    Thanks!
