my timing belt was done at 80k...would it be possible to just change the water pump for now until i change everything else in the next few months?

    Re: leaky water pump

The water pump requires everything else to be taken out. Why not just go ahead and do another belt and be done with it for another 60-80k miles?

    Re: leaky water pump

i had to wait a month before I changed mine. I just made sure I had extra coolant premixed with water (distilled) in the trunk. I checked it before I left for work in the morning and again at the end of the day before I drove home. I also didn't drive much during the weekends and checked it at each destination. Oh, I work 4 miles from home (15 minute drive) and on weekends regularly visited family a few cities away (40 mi. roundtrip).

    Re: leaky water pump

Actually now that I recall correctly it was the after run pump on mine that was leaking but that doesn't change the situation too much.

I ended up buying a new after run pump to r&r it. I also did the timing belt at the same time using the Blau "Enhanced Timing Belt kit".

I did drive it between home and work for that month (15m/day) and had to add ~ 1 cup of coolant every 2-4 days.

    Re: leaky water pump

just an FYI, do some research on the ECS kits... i did my timing belt on my B5 in December and the people that helped me out really didn't have much positive things to say about the ECS kits... I'd try PureMS.com first... you'll just need to get coolant, and the quality of their parts are true OEM... i know the PureMS kit came with all tensioners, rollers, belts, waterpump, thermostat... you'll need to source some of that silicon gasket stuff and may as well replace the serpentine belt tensioner also, as it goes out quite often on the B5's...

PureMS.com timing belt link select the full kit, its an additional $100, total is roughly $334

    Re: leaky water pump

    Team_Soy,

I'd be very careful about how much you drive the car if the waterpump is leaking.

the Timing belt is nothing to play around with. If the pump is leaking that means something isnt right down in that area. you'd hate to see it fail, or sieze up while driving causing the TB to snap which would be major $$$

Like others said, if you have to replace the water pump, you might as well do everything again because you are right there. I dont see it really costing that much more to replace everything.

Anyway I'd be careful about how much you drive the car until you get it fixed. Personally I wouldnt drive it at all until its fixed. I just read your last post saying you have other transportation to drive till you get this fixed, so thats a good thing.

    Just my 2 Cents
