Yet another question about gas mileage

I purchased my 2006 A4 (non-quatro) about 4 weeks ago and was wondering if driving in "S" instead of "D" burn more gas? Also, does changing from stock 16" wheels to 18" wheels with 235/40/18 rubber affect the mpg? I'm asking because filled up today and noticed that I had considerbly lower gas mileage then before.

Anything tire/wheel combo weighing more than stock will cause heavier unsprung weight and will drag down your MPG. S-mode even more so, since the shift points are much more aggressive. Acceleration is much better, but your MPG will suffer as well. I think it's logical and self explanatory.

That's what I was afraid of. I'll have to monitor the mileage and drive in "D" mode to see if that increases the mpg.

yeah man, you gotta use D for fuel economy. its kinda self explanatory also the heavy rims make for a worse ride and worse fuel economy. maybe marginally better handling

^ That's a first. Heavier wheels = better handling? Wow, the quality of the knowledge base has really deteriorated heavily recently.
