    Major Problem and EPC light.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Well the other night I was driving and EPC light came on in a parking lot and car started idleing like it had a blown coilpack and was ideling at 1200rpm but no flashing CEL. I turned car off and started it again and drove home about 2 miles. I turned onto my street and then was cruising and EPC came on again and I lost all power (car floored but it decelerated until it was doing like 5mph). I parked the car and in the morning I tore out all the SAI pump stuff and lines as well as suction pump for brakes and n249 valve hoses and diverter valve stuff that is under the intake manifold. I went to go drive the car and it drove fine in vacuum but as soon as I hit boost it would throw EPC light and fall on its face losing all power. I turned it off and did this a few more times. At one point it would idle at 800 then the next it would at 1200 and then like I said it drove perfect as long as I didnt hit boost, as soon as I do bam EPC and absolutely no power with engine acting like a blown coil pack but no flashing check engine.

I went to leave my friends house and the car then wouldnt even run right, it would just go straight into the EPC light run like dog shit mode after trying to start it like 5 times. Then it wouldnt even start. My head is all screwed up so I cant think. I thought it was something I did with taking out the SAI pump and all the hoses and other crap, but you have to remember it started the symptom the night before so im guessing something just started acting up then and now it took a shit. I cant remember exactly what happened when my MAF went bad once before (dont know if it threw CEL or not) so im wondering if that is part of the problem. I just dont understand the part of it would run until I hit boost then would go into the limp mode every time as soon as I hit boost.

I hooked VAG COM up to read codes but all of them said a number then "code file not loaded" something along those lines, I had like 9 codes, but usually will get like 5 or 6 anyway that always have said that which I figure are misfire codes. I have an old hacked version of VAG COM from 2003 (Release 311-2) so I dont know if the old version isnt telling me crap or what.

EDIT: for future reference it appears to be the throttle body (Code 17976 throttle valve adjuster mechanical malfunction)

Damn, that sucks! Hopefully it's just something minor. Will it run with the MAF unplugged? See if you can find someone locally who can pull the codes for you.

Re: Major Problem and EPC light.

I didnt try unplugging MAF and the car is at friends so I have to get back over there somehow to try. I tried unplugging MAF in the past thought when the MAF went bad and the car wouldnt run. I dont understand because supposibly REVO will run witout the MAF but my car wont. I ran the car without MAF once and it idled terrible and while driving it would load up real bad and when gunned wouldnt go for a few seconds until it cleared up and then it would take off.

I will check the code again and see if that is the number but I don't think so. I also didnt have a stalling problem, just EPC light then limp mode when hitting boost for several times and now it wont start.

If you can get your hands on a spare MAF, I would definetly give that a shot. I remember months ago reading how a malfunctioning MAF will throw teh "EPC" light, and not a CEL.

Just unplugging the MAF won't instantly make it run better, it needs time to adapt.

Re: Major Problem and EPC light.

I am having a friend hook up a Snap On diagnotics machine to it at 7am tomorrow. I tried disconnecting the battery for a while and it did the same thing. You turn the key on and then go to start and the traction control symbol stays on and the EPC on and the car barely stays running misfiring like crazy and you can hit the gas to the floor and it does absolutely nothing.

epc is electronic power control, which pretty much is like your throttle body or acceleator pedal. vag-com is definitly going to be more useful than your friends snap-on tool, try and find someone who has the real deal not a hacked version, im thinking your throttle body took a dump off the top of my head to be honest.

umm we are talking about your B6 Beast right?

I know its possible to run without the MAF, but shouldnt that trigger the ESP light?

Running it without an intercooler (ie just disconnected) wouldnt that "over spin" the turbo?

Code 17976 throttle valve adjuster mechanical malfunction

Guess the throttle body took a shit. I tried pushing the butterfly open after taking it off and it is super stiff, not sure if it is supposed to be like that or not. I had to pry it with 2 screw drivers in order to get it to open 3/4 of the way and then it stayed like that when I took the screw drivers out. I took it apart and pulled the gear out that the motor spins to then spin the butterfly but couldnt hear even the motor running when I put it back together and pushed on the throttle.

The guy I talked to said he had to put another engine in a car in the past and they couldnt get it to run right and had to end up programming the throttle body to the car. I sure hope that isnt the case because like I said before, I am 2 hours away from the Audi dealer.

It is a called a throttle body alaignment and can easily b e done with a VAG-COM

just curious if you tried to do a tba with it on the car. Its block 060 in vagcom. It will definitely help diagnose whats wrong.

Re: Major Problem and EPC light.

I tried to do one with the gas pedal and nothing would happen. Didnt try with vag com though. I then took it off and the butterfly was hard as hell to move too. I had to pry it open with 2 screw drivers! And the throttle body motor wouldnt run at all when turning the key on and whatnot.

EDIT: just went to the car and attempted a TBA with vag com. It didnt work either. I brought up group 60 in basic settings and hit the go button which turned it to ON and the values didnt change. They changed like .2 (75.2 went to 75.4 and kinda jumped back and forth that tiny bit). So I think that is pretty official evidence that thing is shot.
