    Stock brakes..How many pistons?

How many pistons do our stock brakes come with? If they come with any at all. I checked the sticky but it only gave me the size of them. If anyone knows I'd appreciate you sharing your knowledge.

For the front, it's 1 piston, 60mm in diameter. For the rear, it's also 1 piston, 41mm diameter.

how many pistons are the RS4 brakes? that is the swap I'd want to do since I'll never take my car on the track.

They may be 1 piston...but they are awesome stock brakes. Way better than most cars I've driven.

I thought B7 A4's had B6 S4 brakes? Read that on some other thread around here. If so, seems like S4 brakes would be a little more race-tuned.

    I don't know about race-tuned. But B7 A4's and B6 S4's front calipers are both single piston 60mm diameter. The rears are different though....B7 A4 is 41mm, while B6 S4 is 43mm. B6 A4's are 57mm front, 38mm rear. All single piston calipers.

    Re: Stock brakes..How many pistons?

Hah yea, bad terminology fo sho. I'm a little in shock cuz I just fucked my car up by scraping the side along a STUPID-ASS pole in my office building's parking garage literally an hour ago. It's one of those things, you do it every day without thinking, and one time it just bites you in the ass.

Think of those stories you hear of "that one stop sign on your block, that you roll through every day, but one day a cop was waiting and popped you." It's like that, only even worse cuz at least you can blame the cop for being a douche........in this case, it's my own fault!

Bmw is known for using one piston calipers on some of its high performance vehicles. I think the B7 brakes are more than adequate, yes they could be bigger and better but they are pretty damn good

    Re: Stock brakes..How many pistons?

B7 calipers are very adequate even for occacional track duty with some upgrades. B7 calipers with SS lines, racing fluid, larger S4 rotors/carriers and good pads is well beyond what 95% of people can use. B7 A4 and B7 S4 calipers are the same and if they're good enough to stop a car that is 320lbs heavier in the nose, they're more than good enough for the A4.

Yeap I have driven other stock cars too
I think they should at least a two piston caliper for a 1700kg car...
They had bigger brakes on my Golf which was 200kg lighter...Come on now...

    Re: Stock brakes..How many pistons?

Hey Doc, looking at your other thread, your brakes looks different than what we have on our B7's here in the US. Does your car have the B6/7 S4 calipers with 320MM rotors?

It's not how many pistons you have but rather the size of the piston surface area.

Exactly. We have sliding calipers and fixed rotors - The worst combo because you have all the slop of the sliding caliper moving when the brake pedal is pressed. What makes a 4 or 6 piston caliper good is the fact that it is a fixed caliper (not the fact that is has 4 or 6 pistons). A fixed caliper does not slide and there is not slop when the pedal is pressed = more instant brakes. The floating rotor is lighter (and larger for better cooling). When you upgrade our brakes to a 4 or 6 piston caliper, the clamping force can not change or you throw off the bias. The only benefit you will get on the street from a BBK is better brake feel and modulation. Also, the B6 and B7 S4 have the exact same brakes. The B7 A4 has the exact same caliper as those two cars. We just have a smaller rotor.
