I got the engine speed sensor - no signal blah blah code.
    I found this DIY http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=104097 for the B6 1.8.
is it pretty much the same process for the B5?
    mine is a 2001.5

    Re: engine speed sensor replacement

i believe they are the same part.

great news that it's in the same location as the B6, was afraid it would be on top of the tranny like some other models.

let's see how much the local vw dealer charges for the part...

    Re: engine speed sensor replacement

so i got started on the job and then realized i was missing a tool (more like stupidly bought the wrong size swivel) and had to stop midway.
anyway, i noticed that the part came with an offwhite plug.
when i looked in my engine bay, i'm pretty sure the offwhite plug went to a different location than the engine sensor which seemed to be leading back to a blue plug.
has anyone done this job on a 2001 b5?
want to make sure i;m not yanking on the wrong wires.

    Re: engine speed sensor replacement

just follow up the sensor back up to the cluster. I believe you are right that it is a blue plug though

    Re: engine speed sensor replacement

yeh, im pretty sure i trailed it back up to a blue plug.
from looking around, the blue plugged sensor is supposed to be the knock sensor.
but i'm pretty sure i was looking at the engine speed sensor.
hopefully theyre the same part just a different plug color.
if not, wow that would suck.

    Re: engine speed sensor replacement

    finally finished yesterday.
some notes in case people are interested.

    tools used:
    3/8 ratchet
    6inch extension
    swivel socket (optional)
    5mm hex bit
LED lamp (very needed even in daylight)
telescoping magnet (for when you drop the bolt)
wire cutters (for the myriad of zipties, the longer and skinnier the better)

    notes:
the sensor with the gray plug is the correct one.
i had incorrectly trailed it back to the blue which is the knock sensor.

you dont have to get under the car to do the job.
everything can be done from the top of the engine, dont know if there's any real benefit to being under the car as the subframe is pretty much in the way.

the job would be MUCH easier to do if you're doing an oil change at the same time and have the filter removed.

the hardest part of the whole job is getting the old sensor out of the maze it goes through. i think there were about 4-5 zipties, 3 of which were in very annoying crevices.

and dont forget to reconnect the coolant sensor when you close everything up.

I got mine for like $20 at ecs.

    It worked fine.

Do not try to do it from the bottom.

Don't waste time working around the oil filter, just remove it.

    Takes 5 minutes.

    Exiled.......

Dont mess with the maze. Just cut one end off the sensor and then pull the rest of the mess through the "maze" you talked about. When you add the new sensor---just add a couple of zip ties to the existing mess of wires.

is it possible to not have a speed or crankcase sensor. I received the 0322 fault code the other day and after reading all the posts it said the engine speed sensor was the issue. So I ordered one, it came today. I went out to install it and there is currently no engine speed sensor installed. I can see the hole or location its supposed to be installed in the block however there is nothing currently there and there is also no connector to plug it into behind the coolant reservoir.

that being said if there is no speed sensor what else could throw the p0322 code?

A place between here and there

You are doing it wrong. Your car would not even start without that sensor. ECU would not allow power to the ignition coils for you to have spark.

that was my assumption as well however I cant find this sensor for the life of me then.. the link you posted is the same one I looked at to find the location originally and it is not there. I also took a picture behind the coolant reservoir as there is no plug for the other end of the speed sensor cable.. could it possibly be located somewhere else on a b7?

here is a picture of where im assuming the speed sensor should be. its hard to get a larger view but this is just to the right of the oil filter.

I uploaded the image to members area.. not sure how to get it to show up..haha here is the link when I pull it up though.

I don't think you are looking at the right place. Below are the pics I have taken recently while troubleshooting an issue with the crank sensor. The first pic is just looking from the top, sensor is marked with an arrow. Second one is a closeup of the sensor where there is a similar opening present like what you have posted above, not sure what it is for I can see some tooth..
