    nitorgen ion tires??

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just wondering if anyone is doing it? The dealership next to the one i work at is advertising it, i was thinking about doing it, but i havent really read anything to convincing about it yet other than it helps prevent the tires losing pressure as fast.

On a side note, while i was test driving a car at work the other day i had a stupid thought, what if i filled my tires with helium?? I remember hearing about a guy at lockheed talking about it in aircraft tires as a way of weight reduction. For a split second it made since to me, than i thought, it wont do anything. Sorry i just had to tell my most recent "stupid" thought.

nitrogen leaks out a very small ammount slower. and no helium wont make a difference :P

thats what i realized after i thought about helium, right before i hit myself for the thought.
But maybe i will try the nitrogen.

    Re: nitorgen ion tires??

Nitrogen decreases the chance of pressure fluctuations due to temperature. Constant tire pressure. Better fuel economy/tire wear.

If you check your tire pressures on a regular basis, don't bother. It is more of a gimmick for lazy people.

Atmosphere air is 78% nitrogen (or something like that).

Its also helpful for race cars, as it allows the tires to be at a more constant pressure, allowing for better grip and better wear.

You see it in formula one.

    Re: nitorgen ion tires??

The biggest advantage to nitorgen filled tires is the more constant tire pressure. It does not react as much to heat as normal air. It also leaks out slower than normal air due to the larger molecule size, however, it is not too much of a difference from what I have heard.

I run it, but just b/c we have a tank at the shop for all the track cars. Definitely less fluctuation in pressure from temperature, but it is nothing to get hyped about.

Ditto. If its a daily driver, it probably isn't a smart buy to use the extra money.

    Re: nitorgen ion tires??

I didn't pay extra for nitorgen when I got my new tires in the fall of '07. I have to say the tire pressure stays very consistent even when it's really cold. Would I pay extra for this??? Maybe to get the consistent tire pressure.

It costs money for the people to fill your tires with nitrogen so yes they normally charge you..

Lots of places will fill you up for free with nitrogen if you have your tires mounted and balanced by them.

I read somewhere that it costs around $10 a tire for nitrogen.
