    fuel economy on chipped cars

Do our 2.0T B7s get better fuel economy when chipped? I did a search on this subject and couldn't find anything...

The reason I ask is because a lot of BMWs get better MPG (only by 1-2mpg) when chipped (Turner Motorsport, Vishnu Tuning, Active Autowerke, etc.), so I was wondering if the same is true for our cars...thanks in advance

Re: fuel economy on chipped cars

you will get less MPG because you will enjoy driving it so much more (and you will drive it harder) but its worth it... any difference +/- 1 or 2 MPG is negligible in my book

Re: fuel economy on chipped cars

i havn't driven my car long distance yet (still on business in europe) but when i chipped my 1.8t jetta i saw an increase 3-4mpg....and i'm expecting the same in my chipped 2.0t. Yes you drive it more but that doesn't mean you have to step on it all the time.

yes, chipped 2.0t does get better mileage. Some of the CVT guys are getting 600 miles(that's getting close to 1000 km) per tank. My car with 6mt has been consistently getting 500+ mixed city/highway driving

I don't count my city driving miles anymore because my car is a garage queen, weekender, long trip car. So in the city it gets driven very aggressively. However, last road trip I was on I got around 35 MPG.

I'm sorry but to me that's unheard of. I drive 75% highway with no traffic and even with my first non chipped A4 I didnt get mileage that good, and now, a newer A4 w/chip I easily get less mileage. Maybe 22-24mpg / 350miles a tank on good weeks. This includes a few moments of WOT but nothing major.

really? i have quattro and maybe you cvt guys have much bigger tanks but with 40% city, 60% highway, granny-style driving, i'm getting like 350-365 miles per tank.. prob avg around 22-23 mpg.. .chipping improved my mileage but that was completely canceled out by adding larger rims

i don't know how hell you guys are getting 600 miles per tank...

Are you guys (500+ per tank) going based on what the trip computer tells you or the actual numbers at the pump. That can make a world of a difference with real world numbers.. The best and most accurate measure is how many miles you drove on that tank by how many gallons pumped in.

I've got the APR chip mod and saw a pretty decent increase; although I did the cat-back exhaust mod at the same time. I drove the brand new car (so was on first tank) from San Francisco to Portland before the mod and got 27.3 MPG. Afterwards I can get 34 MPG on the freeway and mid-20's in the city if not pushing it and low 20's if my right foot is controlling me which is fairly often!

Re: fuel economy on chipped cars

I agree I noticed a small jump with APR it is nothing major but these cars are amazing with mileage no matter what. I have the 6 speed and even if I push it hard I can't get below 20 unless I push it hard all day long. Either way chip will not hurt your MPG. Once again I can not stress how much a chip changes this car, all the non-believers just get it moded for a day, and if you don't notice and love the change then, please buy a different car.

Oh yeah and on freeway I get around 30ish, but that is with full acceleration on the on-ramps and I never am on a freeway for more than 6-7 miles :(...

Re: fuel economy on chipped cars

I definitely think it helps a little for a couple of reasons.
After you are over the newfound power (and- let's face it, even after the flash this is not a fast car), you don't need to stay in the gas as long to accelerate appropriately. Less time on gas/boost should mean better mileage. On top of that, most chips/flashes mostly gain power by optimizing settings such as Air/Fuel ratio, timing, boost, etc. These type of tweaks benefit both power and economy by making the engine more efficient. I definitely experienced this, and a 74 mph cruise now yields 30.6 mpg for me.

After reading the last couple of posts I get the feeling that people are just looking at what the trip computer is reading at that moment and going based off of that. I dont really think it's accurate to say how many miles per gallon you are getting overall by using a momentary reading on your trip computer. Now if you tell me you drove on the last tank of gas 380 miles and pumped in 15.62 gallons therefore averaging 24mpg I would be a bit more receptive to those numbers.

I am doing mainly city and my mileage has fallen through the floor. It sits around 20 mpg, REVO, all city.
I was getting 32 mpg, stock, with nearly all highway.

Re: fuel economy on chipped cars

I calculate it every time I fill up and yes it went up, but when I put my foot into it I can see by the trip that I will be getting less this tank then last unless I stop. The in car readings (avg) are very close to what it actually works out to be and also helps me get more out of a tank since I use it to adjust my driving. What I said above was an example.

If you have the trip computer, the short trip monitor, number 1, is accurate on trips. Number 2 keeps a running tally. Over the last 1000 miles or so, I've gotten about 28mpg mixed city/hwy. On the highway though, I routinely get between 32-36 mpg.

sort of...you have to remember that the CVT fuel tank is 2 gallons bigger than the Quattro tank which roughly gets at least an extra 60 mpg more than that of the quattro's tank.

I use the trip computer to gage how I'm doing as far as mpg goes, but I know it is at least 2 mpg higher than actual. About a year ago, I started keeping track of my mpg using the old fashion way...the more accurate measure. I only use the reading off my odometer and amount of fuel I pump in. With about one year of data (first 3 months on stock program, the rest on APR 91), I have the followings:

Avg. miles per tank: 382 miles
Avg. gallons per tank (during fill-up): 15.7 gallons
    Avg. mpg: 24.36 mpg

Most miles in a tank: 513 miles
    Most gallons filled: 16.765 gallons
    Best mpg: 33.53 mpg

Least miles in a tank: 325 miles
    Least gallons filled: 14.172 gallons

That sounds about right. That instance with 33.53mpg must have been mostly highway with not a lot of speeding.

Yup...that 33.53mpg and 513 miles in one tank came from the same trip (LA to Vegas, then back to LA in one tank of gas). Cruised at 70mph, A/C off, about 90% of the 513 miles were highway. Had there not be a bit of traffic jam on my way back to LA, the mpg would've been slightly higher.

Based off those readings and my data from www.mymiletracker.com (doing it the old fashioned way - odometer readings and gas fillups) - again, I repeat, how the hell are people getting 600 miles per gallon with mixed city/highway? That's like almost 38 mpg on quattro and probably around 35ish(?) for CVT...

I get 420 or so before I got chipped with about 60% highway. In the 3 days I've had the chip, I am getting the exact same milage, but I've been gunning it like crazy. To me, that would equate to the 2-4 mpg increase a few have mentioned once my foot lightens up some from being chipped.

Re: fuel economy on chipped cars

We actually have another thread about this, and I replied there as well.

I reset a trip meter everytime i fill up. My last 2 tanks are about 510-520, pump stopped right around 17 gallons. My highest per-tank mileage was 550, and that took 17.7 gallons.

Vwong, I see that your most gallon filled was only 16.765 on a cvt (fronttrak), you can go another 30-40 miles on it before you fill up.

For many of you with cvt and not-so-good gas mileage, I noticed you guys drive 08's. After your second oil change (at around 5k miles), your gas mileage will go up significantly, so don't worry just yet.

My car is 2.0T quattro 6MT. According to the specs on AW, the tank in quattro should be 16.6 gallons, but since I've got that 16.765 gallons fill-up, I'm not sure if the specs is correct.

In very few cases and under special circumstances, and certain rpms do you see more mpg with a chipped car...

Actually, I have cvt on my 2007 and have gotten as much as 615 miles out of a tank...trending to get 670 out of this tank with new tires and alignment....but cvt has a larger gas tank i believe (18 gal) than quattro, but if you watch the DIS you should be able to improve your mpg...in my 05 b6 quattro i got as much as 45+mpg on interstate....but i put it on cruise at 45mph and turn on hazards...really pisses people off!!!lol

Re: fuel economy on chipped cars

I recently picked up a 2005.5 A4 Quattro, 2.0T with manual 6spd. After 2 tankfuls of measuring, I got an overall average 28.7mpg with 70% highway use and normal driving. The trip computer was indicating 29.1mpg over those 2 tankfuls. As is often stated, YMMV.

Keep it in perspective. There are many factors to consider when comparing each others gas mileage. For example: Do you drive in hilly vs flatland terrain? What kind of weather/wind conditions during your test? Are you a lead foot and/or late shifter? Manual transmission or Tiptronic? What is the overall health of your engine?
