E-brake in need of adjustment after doing rear pads?

Ok, so my rear pads were beyond worn, and I finally got around to changing them yesterday evening....prior to changing them my ebrake was rather stiff and would only pull up 2-3 inches......after changing my pads the handle is really loose and pulls up 6-7 inches now......did i break something or is there just a way to adjust it back down to normal?

I remember reading that it was self adjusting. After several times of use it'll become tight again.
