It means you can use the phone on any carrier not just AT&T

But, didn't Apple make the program that runs the iPhone on the computer revoke the "unlock" status every time it is hooked up to the PC

Unlocked = can be used with SIM cards for any GSM supplier's cell phone network. Most useful when travelling outside Canada, since we have only one GSM network in Canada right now. A SIM card is needed to gain access to a carrier's network in the GSM world.

    Re: iphone unlocked

there still isn't an UNLOCKED iphone 3G

you can jailbreak it so that semi bypasses the activation and allows for 3rd party apps, a hyper sim / turbo sim is still required for foreign sim use.

unlocked means you can use the phone on other networks with other SIM cards. When ur phone is unlocked you have to make sure in Itunes that it doesn't automatically update the firmware. Jailbreaking enables tje phone to ise 3rd party apps not approved by apple

    Re: iphone unlocked

There isn't for the 3G iPhone

3G iPhone - can jailbreak using a custom firmware (not OEM apple firmware - 2.0) or can downgrade to 1.1.4 firmware properly jail broken but still with 2.0 radio / modem version which cannot be unlocked except for using hacked sim ways (ie turbo sim / hyper sim)

2G iPhone - can be upgraded to 2.0 firmware BUT can retain 1.1.4 modem / radio version which CAN be unlocked via software without editing, 2.0 jailbroken via custom firmware or 1.1.4 jailbroken with original firmware

    .... from DEV team ...

The iPhone Dev Team is still hard at work unlocking the iPhone 3G, luckily they are keeping everyone in the loop in regards to their progress. They haven’t achieved an unlock yet but they have reached a milestone on that road by successfully downgrading the modem baseband firmware to an older version.

Thus a full unlocked 2.0 firmware without hacks isn't available yet. If you have a 3G iPhone that is unlocked running 1.2.0 firmware, that would be wicked.
