    Help? front crank seal issue..

Project: Timing belt replacement. Idea is to get it done so I can drive to Waterfest Friday.

ISSUE: I fuct up the new front crank seal I was installing. I bought the Ultimate Timing Belt Kit from ECS for the correct eng code (AEB), but it still seemed to me to be a bit too large in diameter.

I removed the old one w/ the self tapping screw and a pair of diag's/wire cutters. So there's a small hole in it no wider than the shank of a thumb tack.

I'm at work, home is 56 miles away, all highway. Is there any chance of plugging the hole on the old one to make it home? I know I can't find a front crank seal here, but I can probably find one in my hometown.

    Thanks in advance.

How much oil pressure is at the front crank seal? Is it actually pressurized or is it a the type that only gets oil splashed on it?

i WOULD NOT drive it until you get a new seal should be pretty common seal it was used on older vw's as well as new.

Yea, that was the idea. Now it's 4:15 AM and I want to go home. I'll keep an eye on it. It's not leaking now and it's been idling for 25-30 mins.

I was monitoring oil pressure and it hasn't changed. Cold start 60psi, full coolant and oil temp drops down to 20psi. I'm willing to take the risk. I get a free tow once a month through my insurance agency, if it comes to that.

    thanks for the advice.

Oil pressure looks normal; mine is about 25 psi all warmed up and 60 cold.

    Good luck!
