Re: Is anyone building their trans???

b5 transmissions are stronger than b6 transmissions... Ive been seeing a lot of blown up trans's lately. Your is a 6 speed correct?

Im right by you usually at school if you need me to do some trans stuff for you, although going from 6 speed to 5 probably wouldnt be what you wanted. Let me know I can get you a 2.8 trans for the time being

Re: Is anyone building their trans???

    I shredded my 1.8 5spd 3rd gear syncro.

It was cheaper for me (by hundreds and hundreds of dollars) to buy a 2.8 5spd transmission and install that when I put my 2.0 into my car.

I may rebuild my 1.8 at some point in the future. Who knows...

Re: Is anyone building their trans???

well my trans is being rebuilt right now. but in the future when i want to put a stroker kit on my motor, i want my trans to be able to hold up and not have this same problem. so should i just take it to the trans shop and be like make this thing handle 500hp no problem or just put a stage 5 clutch and forget about it?

As far as I know (someone correct me if I am wrong) no one has rebuilt their transmission as a result of a fully built motor making bukou power.

Re: Is anyone building their trans???

2.8 is only a 5spd and all five gears are taller (longer). If you have a 6spd I'd suggest staying with the 6spd since that gives you the overdrive in 6th. The 2.8 gives you an overdrive 5th but all the other gears are also taller. I don't mind it, actually, but I'm still getting use to driving around town in 2nd gear (30-40mph).

syncros are f'd up probably due to laziness with the clutch while shifting.

no problem, a possible option for you is to get a b5 s4 trans, which is stronger and should work, the only problem i foresee is the linkage

    What would be needed to get a B5 S4 6speed into a B6 5spd?

I 'heard' (and, again, maybe I'm wrong here) that the B5 S4 trans is a different length, thereby requiring a different rear driveshaft. I recall reading in the B5 A4 forum about someone wanting to put a B5 S4 trans in his A4 and needing to use the driveshaft and rear end or some other schit like that.

The linkage... You'll want the linkage all the way to the shifter and probably the shifter itself (if you're coming from a 1.8 5spd) since you need the push down reverse capability.

EDIT: Read this thread: http://audizine.com/forum/showthread...ighlight=trans to confirm or deny what I just wrote....

Those are also much harder to find and cost much more.

To the OP, if you want to rebuild your existing tranny I would talk to Jason (www.jhmotorsports.com) about which parts to order. He will know.

Dave, Im pretty sure the gears on our transmissions just blow up... like the gears themselves. An OEM gear rebuild wont help much IMO

EDIT: I just saw the OP blew his synchro... I suppose thats different, I actually do remember hearing that the 6 speeds are stronger

The ultimate option is a B6S4 trans. The 1.8T will never make enough power to blow one of those. The flip side is they're about 4k used

I remember reading on here that 6th gear in the B6S4 is about as bad as 5th gear in the B6A4. There was some talk about replacing it with a taller gear but I'm not sure if anything ever happened with it.

Well, if you watch Jason's videos both the collars and syncros have been revised by Audi. I don't know of anyone who knows more about which tranny parts are the best for high HP applications than him. If nothing else, he will be able to point the OP in the right direction if he tells him how much power he plans on making. Whether that is finding a tranny with a specific code or rebuilding the one he has got.

Plus Jason is a super nice guy.

hm... If I could keep my old trans I probably would have just built that, I loved those gears for driving around town, but the 2.8 highway miles are clutch

Ultimately. I want to build the 1.8 trans I have and stick a TDI 5th gear in there. Just like my buddy did to his MKIV Golf.

That's what I was thinking. If you rebuild you can swap gear sets around and have the best of both worlds.
