Okay so I bought my car with 81,XXX on the clock. I have a 3 year 36,000 warranty on it that covers the timing belt.

I don't know if the timing belt has been changed yet I'm currently at 88,000 and I got a quote from a local shop to do the belt and water pump for like 750. He left me a voicemail with that info so I don't know if that's parts and labor or just labor.

Audi doesn't say to do it till 105,000. So if it snaps before then it should be free city to get it all fixed, assuming those warranty assholes will honor their product. Or I can take it to this shop and they can do it cheap.

The guy that gave me the quote came into att where I work and I saw he had a B5 1.8t and that's how we got to talking about it, he said he did his on his 1.8t and he coud get me a quote

    Thanks

$750 might be for just labor, parts alone will run between $250-$350. I just changed the belt and pump on my 2000 S4 with 64k miles and the water pump was already weeping coolant (no coolant on garage floor yet).

Do it. NOW. 105,000 miles is a load of shit. If you still have the stock water pump, it probably won't last that long and if it seizes, it will turn your timing belt into ribbons. The last thing you want is to deal with broken timing belt carnage through a warranty company. TRUST ME ON THIS. Your time is much better spent doing other things. They WILL nickel and dime you and you will still get stuck with a pretty big bill on top of the fact that a broken timing belt puts your turbos at risk as well (ask me how I know). .think about it like this

$1000 for peace of mind (t-belt)

    OR

$3000 for engine swap, engine removal a second time after it's found that your turbos are also toast, and new turbos (KO4's ha ha) through a warranty company.

I know it's a good idea to get it done and I knew the majority of you guys on here would say suck it up and do it.

I would rather drop 1000 on a new exhaust, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

    Thanks

Ah the revolving post on when to do the timing belt. The biggest question is Do you feel lucky? You could go 130,000 on original TB and it could snap on you next week. Its very hard to say.

I did mine at about 80,000 I looked at the old belt and it looked like brand new so I probably could of easily went to 100k. But like everyone is saying, if the waterpump goes it can ruin things in a hurry and then your engine is pretty much toast.

just ask frimmel. Thats what happened to his S4. Now he's sitting with a shell of a car and no engine
